Every year.

Same thing. It had been this way since she'd first met Hisoka. When he'd first saved her and up until now. She could clearly remember the first time she had given him the chocolate heart--though it was a much messier creation than now--and had smiled at him, as bright as sunshine and soft innocence, somehow the complete opposite of him. 

He had stared at her as she thrust it forward, eyes large and earnest. Maybe it did look odd; her being a middle-schooler at that time and him, a second year in high-school. He'd blinked at her before his lips quirked up in a smile that made her heart skip a beat. He'd taken it, stared, flickered his bright violet gaze up to hers. She had been so distracted with his small smile, Akari had almost missed the sound of something crunching. 

Slowly, her hazel hues had been drawn down towards the noise. She could still remember that chill that went down her spine when she saw the crumbled chocolate beneath his old sneakers, broken pieces here and there. Hisoka lifted his foot a second later, a small chuckle beginning to come from him before it broke out in a full laugh.

And she could still remember the words. 

"Hey, ain't ya' the girl who almost got fucked in that alley? Ya' haven't knocked yerself off yet?"

She'd blinked. 

"Yer kinda cute. Givin' me chocolate and shit. If yer tryin' to confess or somethin', it's useless. I don't have time for crap like that." 

And she had watched as he left her behind, broken pieces of a heart lying in front of her. She did not know why she kept coming back to Karakura High, why she kept waiting for him at the entrance, only for him to walk right past her--or maybe throw his bag in her hands so that she could carry his books along with hers. 

Those years were the worst, she thought to herself as she stared at the perfectly wrapped Valentine Gift. A chocolate heart. Just as every year. And each year, as tradition, he broke it in front of her with a smile. Sometimes, she wondered if he wished that was her own heart. 

Pathetic. Pathetic. Pathetic. 

Not this year. This year, she wouldn't let him break it. She ripped off the plastic.

Slowly, her arms rose, holding the chocolate heart towards the ceiling before bringing it down against the hard wood of her kitchen table. The force worked, bits and pieces of the sweet spreading all over the kitchen floor. 

Good. 

"Stupid..." For some odd reason, it was satisfying to see the crumbled bits.

No escaping. 

Just chuckling and rough hands that wouldn't leave. Long before, Akari had squeezed her eyes shut, as to block out what was happening--to her, before her. 

She couldn't breathe. It felt like all the air had left her, as if they were suffocating her. Hands slid from her upper arms, stomach, and finally flitting underneath her skirt. There were more laughs, a grunt, and finally Akari realized she was crying.

Five of them. Too big to fight off. She had already scratched one and this had only caused anger and inability to see out her swollen right eye. Brushes on her chest, hands pinned down, and fingers dragging.

I'm scared.

Cry. Scream. Shout. 

Vanish. She should feel something. She should at least say something. 

Just when fingers hooked on either side of underwear, there was the sound of a sharp whistle--wind. Automatically, her ears perked, watery eyes snapping open. She was dropped the next second, legs weak and heart hammering against her ribs. The Fullbringer didn't notice her shirt had been ripped open until she felt cool air hit her stomach, goosebumps rising almost automatically.

"Oi! What's goin' on 'round her?"

She didn't know the voice, but then men seemed to. They cursed, complained, one even stepping in front of her as if to block off anyone's view. Slowly, Akari blinked, eyes landing on the cocky grin splayed across the male's face.

Who...?

She didn't even have a moment to blink again before something swung through the air, the wet sound of a blunt object hitting the first right in the head. Curses flew from lips, the four men watching as the other fell. Still, Akari's gaze did not leave the man with the weapon.

Blond hair, a school uniform, a bat located right in his hands.

"Bastard!"

"We'll kill you!"

The bat swung--again, again. The blond's laughter began to ring through the alley as he counted each off, "One! Two! Three! Alri--Fucker! I said three! Stay down! Holy shit! This is fun! Keep 'em comin'!"

There was blood. So much. And the blond still didn't stop. There was one last; trembling as the male dropped the bloodied bat, eyeing him with a steel gaze. Finally, after a moment, the last ran off with his tail between his legs.

Akari simply watched.

"Ahhh," the blond said, rolling a shoulder lazily, "Now, 'm bored again. They didn't fight at all..."

Her tongue felt heavy within her mouth. She was trembling. It took a moment before his violet eyes darted towards her.

The girl opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

"Like I said, borin'." With that, he turned away from her, hands tucking within his pockets.

Akari rose to her knees. "T-Thank you...!"

He stopped walking. Head craning around, purple met hazel. He didn't say anything as he looked at her.

"I...I..."

"Shut up already. Yer annoyin'." And then continued on his way. As if there weren't bodies, as if there wasn't blood, as if there wasn't a broken person he left there.

Wait.

She stood on shaky legs, hesitating before walking after him. And soon, that ended into a light jog. And then a run.

"Don't cry." He said later and she hadn't realized she had been. "Yer alive, right? So stop cryin'."

"I'm...alive because of you."

He blinked at her and then grinned. "Looks like ya' owe me, huh?"
