What’s the deal with Pershing Square in front of Grand Central? There’s no square? 🤷♂️ This postcard shows the landscaped plaza, Pershing Square, that was originally planned to be built in 1919, named after General John J. Pershing. Unfortunately, in the next year the land was sold to a developer who decided to build an office building on the location instead, naming it the Pershing Square Building. The building was completed in 1923 and Pershing Square came to be known as the area directly under the Grand Central Viaduct. #pershingsquare #grandcentral #grandcentralterminal #midtown #parkave #postcard #historicpostcard #newyorkcity #architecture #manhattan #pershingsquarebuilding #nychistory #urbanism #42ndstreet #nyhistory #historicpostcard #urbanhistory #nycurbanism (at Grand Central Terminal) https://www.instagram.com/p/BygFXKyno7e/?igshid=1xdlgr3o4lpxs
