Why I Love/Chose History - Reason #2

2. It will always surprise you.

I remember hearing the news that Richard III’s*** remains were discovered in England in 2012, just 4 months after I visited the country. Legend had it that his bones had been thrown into the river, but in reality, he was hastily buried on the grounds of what was then a Friary. Needless to say, the Friary is long gone and at the time of the discovery, its grounds were serving as a parking lot. King Richard III of England was found under a parking lot, you guys. A former ruler of an entire country. If that isn’t surprising, then I don’t know what is.

History will always happen as long as we exist on this earth, which means there will always be surprises to uncover all across the globe. One of my favorite historic surprises is the discovery of a new dinosaur. You’ve got an excavation team that is over the moon, paleontologists who just fulfilled their wildest dreams, and details about a dinosaur that just yesterday, couldn’t be found anywhere on Google. I will never get tired of those.

Why I Love/Chose History - Reason #1

1. It is real.

Now before you go "well duh," let me explain.

I haven't met anyone that dislikes a good story. Fiction, as a genre, is just as popular now as it was in the 1800’s, and why wouldn't it be? The characters, the events, the details; it strengthens every aspect of our creativity and opens the door to endless possibilities. 

With history, you have the same characters, events, and details, only, they really happened! Former U.S. President Andrew Jackson really did have a pet bird who swore like a sailor and had to be removed from his funeral service. It is true that the Ancient Romans used human urine as mouth wash. It goes on and on and on! I don’t know about you, but it is somewhat comforting to me that real life can be just as colorful as fiction.

Check out this short clip on pioneer inventor Ralph Baer, "The Father of Video Games."  Mr. Baer is credited with creating the world's first home video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey.  He passed away on Saturday at the age of 92.

Once in history class we were talking about the russian revolution and we ended up examining pictures of Raputins dick.

one of my favourite histories i've learnt so far this semester is about the frisian leader radbod (i like to picture that he really did have a rad bod and this was like a nickname for his holy hotness) 

so when charlemagne and his friends were trying to convert the frisians to christianity back in the 700s, the archbishop was all "yeah radbod you need to get baptised because that's really important" and radbod was all "ehhh i don't know but yeah probs ok whatevs" and then the archbishop was like "yeah man because lemme tell you a thing! all your ancestors didn't and now they're in hell! and look at all these peasants that are gonna go to heaven now because they'll wanna follow you!"

and radbod sorta stopped and was like "wait what you just... hold on one second! you mean all the royal dudes are in hell and you want me to go to heaven with POOR PEOPLE uh no thank you"

and that's the story of how radbod didn't get baptised

It's 15 minutes into history class and all we have talked about so far is food

I've always been interested in history

example one, I got my cat when I was like six or seven and named her Rosa after Rosa Parks

I am developing an obsession with ancient history. Cleopatra... so beautiful, all of it. Just absolutely majestic.
