YashD - the FilmStar is born October7, 2016: Bioscope, Axis Mall 10.30am. The dream of Yashians the world over has become a reality today. The dream to see the King of their hearts ,Yash Dasgupta, take the celluloid world by storm. As I went into the theatre in nervous anticipation, nervous, not because there was any doubt in my heart as to the magic and talent of the lead actor or the team, but because cinema, ultimately is very subjective, the excitement of the wait finally bore fruition with the appearance of Yash in his hallmark subtlety. His childlike innocence, palpable as he shared screen space with the young ones at play, was effectively used by the director, Birsa Dasgupta to unleash the horror that was to follow……and the expression of Kabeer aka ‘Guru’ as he faces his last assailant was enough to convey the depth of the actor’s capabilities. The backstory succinctly portrayed, our hearts prepared for a golden hearted gangster, but many more surprises were to follow. Critics have proclaimed that gangster stories are predictable. However Life itself is predictable in certain ways isn’t it? As soon as we are born we know that one day we must die…what matters is how we lead our life in between… And I felt that is exactly what Gangster set out to do. To remind us that life throws challenges along its way and it depends on us to choose wisely. Gangster is not a run-of-the-mill story because Guru is certainly not Robin Hood in disguise…he is unhappy with what circumstances have thrust upon him, has never really come to terms with it and as he himself declares ,was looking for an opportunity to opt out of it. If it is claimed that the decisions Gangster Guru takes are simplistic, it is because the story wants to convey just that, that Kabeer is a simple and ordinary man who found himself trapped in extraordinary circumstances. The strange dichotomy in the character of Guru, the Gangster with a heart, has been superbly essayed by Yash Dasgupta. Good cinema is teamwork. Mimi Chakraborty, in the very powerful female lead of Ruhi, acts as a foil to every nuanced move of Yash aka Guru. I will carry in my heart the fantastic portrayal of the cruel overlord by Bratya Basu, the top cop Shantilal Mukherjee and the fraternal camaraderie of Sourav Das as Guru’s sacrificial friend. That a powerful actor can effortlessly make a place in the audience’s hearts, whether his onscreen time is two hours or two minutes was proved yet again by Gourav Chakraborty and Biswajit Chakraborty. Every object in every frame of Gangster seemed to throb with a life of its own, thanks to the effective cinematography of Subhankar. The captain of the ship, Birsa Dasgupta must be congratulated for gifting the Bengali audience a commercial movie that will be able to rise above narrow man made walls. And now for the man himself…thank you Yash, for proving over and over again that we who are so appreciative of your remarkable talent are not merely blind in love, that like Guru our love may be unconditional but our appreciation for your abilities is based not merely on platitudes. None of us is perfect and every day of our lives is a learning experience. The day we start thinking we know it all we will stop growing as human beings. Your interpretation of Kabeer/Guru has evoked every conceivable emotion which proves you have done justice to the character. That radiant smile, the tears for a friend, the angst of a lover who knows the bitter truth, in every frame that you were present you showcased that Gangster may be your screen debut but you certainly are not just another debutant. The now near perfect Bangla reflects your hardwork and dedication to your craft.
