I could tell something was off as soon as Chloe closed the door behind her. I looked her over more closely as she took off her shoes.
She was wearing her usual clothes, just a tshirt and capris. Her hair looked a bit messier than usual, but I had a feeling that wasn’t what was throwing me off.
“What a day,” Chloe huffed, throwing herself down on the couch next to me.
She wasn’t moving weirdly. Her voice sounded husky, though; maybe she was getting sick.
“Yeah?” I prompted carefully.
“Yeah.”
She scooted close to me, leaning in to see what was on my phone. I just had Facebook open, scrolling through a friend’s wedding photos. I angled my screen to let her see better.
“Oh, she’s cute,” Chloe said as I slid past a photo of the bride laughing.
She rested her head on my shoulder.
I could feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Chloe and I had moved in together four months ago; we knew each other from class and not much else, so it took some time to get comfortable with each other. We might sit together, but cuddling was still untouched territory.
This was the closest we’d ever been and I could feel myself tensing up.
This doesn’t mean anything, my thoughts hissed.
At the same time, some hope stirred in me. I glanced at Chloe from the corner of my eye, but her eyes were fixed on my screen. At some point, she had started swiping on my phone as I held it, just letting her navigate through my feed.
What if she’s acting weird because… because… Could she like me? We haven’t talked about relationships at all, maybe she’s closeted too. And maybe she found out that I’m a dyke somehow. Maybe, maybe this is… Something.
“Georgie?”
I turned to look at Chloe. “Hm?”
“I asked if you had any thoughts for dinner.”
“Oh, I…” My mouth felt dry.
Calm down.
“Yeah, I’m not sure,” I answered, putting my phone away. “What were you thinking?”
“I was thinking maybe chicken and whatever vegetable we have right now, but we could also order pizza.” She moved to grab her phone and stopped herself, turning to me with a bright smile. “Oh! But before we decide, I have to tell you about Grace’s new dog!”
I found myself staring at her lips as she kept talking. They had a light sheen, a thin layer of lipgloss that tinted them a rosy pink. Her lips pressed together to pronounce a ‘B’ sound. I watched the tip of her tongue peak out as she pronounced an ‘L’.
I haven’t been kissed in so long.
My eyes trailed to the side, slipping across her cheek and down her neck, watching the movement of her hair as she spoke.
“And I think that’s just crazy,” she was saying. She tucked her hair behind her ear. “Like, who just steals a dog like that?”
“I don’t think it’s really stealing if—“
I froze. There was a spot on her neck, a little purple-ish speck surrounded by a nearly perfect red ring.
“What is that?”
“Hm?” Chloe turned to face me directly, the mark instantly hidden again. “What’s what?”
“You have— on your neck. There’s something on your neck.”
“Oh, weird,” she said, unconcerned. Chloe pulled out her phone. “I’m leaning towards pizza for dinner, honestly, I don’t want to cook.”
“No, Chloe, the mark looks like, like, I don’t even know,” I said, my unease growing. “Seriously, you should go look at it. It’s like a bite, maybe?”
“I’ll look in a second,” she said, sounding perturbed.
“Chloe—“
“Can you drop it?” she snapped.
She stood up. On an impulse I grabbed her arm and she whirled on me, ripping her arm out of my grasp.
“What’s wrong with you, Georgie?” she demanded.
“I— I’m sorry, you’re just acting so weird,” I said dumbly.
“How?” There was a bite to every word; I’d never seen her so pissed. “How am I being weird, Georgie?”
“I dunno you just… Something feels off, Chloe.”
She rolled her eyes. I knew I should let it go, but something in my gut twisted at the thought.
“No, I’m serious,” I said, my voice shaky but determined. “You have to at least go look.”
Chloe put her hands on her hips, standing over me. I could tell she was thinking.
Without warning, she climbed on the couch and straddled my hips, her hands resting on my shoulders. I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
I didn’t want to move. Even with how weird she was acting, I needed to see what she would do next.
Chloe leaned in and I felt her kiss my neck.
My fingers itched to hold her, but I knew I had to stop this.
“Chloe, I—“
Her mouth opened and I felt her tongue drag against my skin, pulling a moan from my throat. I felt her bite down as her tongue continued to swirl against my skin.
My hands found her waist, grabbing at her over her t-shirt.
I can’t let her do this, something’s wrong, part of me urged, but the heat pulling in my stomach kept me put.
The feeling of her teeth digging in made me squirm. Her tongue ran along her bottom teeth, back and forth.
And then I felt something else, something small and sharp, just above her tongue.
“Ch—“
There was a sharp pinch, something piercing me, and I could feel warmth immediately begin spreading from that spot on my neck. I pushed at her waist, but Chloe gripped me hard, keeping her mouth on me until I felt whatever it was pull out of my neck.
When she sat back, Chloe was grinning.
“What’re you— What the fuck!” My hand flew to my neck, there was blood on my fingers when I pulled my hand back. “What the... What…”
The heat from the pinprick was spreading in each direction, across my collarbone, down to my shoulder, up into my jaw and then my ears and I could feel my thoughts slow as my face heated up. My hand fell to the couch as the heat engulfed my bicep. My head slowly relaxed back into the couch; my neck settled in an awkward position, but I couldn’t manage to adjust it. I could still move my legs, but I could feel the effect traveling lower, to my chest, my stomach, my hips.
I could feel even my fear dissipating. It was still there, but it felt distant, less important. I found my thoughts drifting back to Chloe, her weight on me, the sound of her voice, her lips.
“Wha… Wha’re ou… Wha’s happ’ing?” I slurred.
“I wasn’t going to sting you right away like this,” Chloe said, climbing off of me. I had to look up through my eyelashes to see her; she looked smug looking down at me. “I infected this host just a few hours ago, so I’m not prepared to properly infect you yet, but you just would not shut up.”
I tried to make a noise, but only a grunt came out.
The heat was only growing and I felt a need stir in me as it reached between my legs.
Chloe’s voice, Chloe’s legs, Chloe, just Chloe, Chloe, Chloe, fuck I need to— Chloe, what’s happening? I can’t move, Chloe, Chloe, Chloe…
“I have all her memories, I know you and Chloe don’t know each other that well, so I’m surprised you could tell something was off,” she— the creature said. “I’ll have to ask you where I went wrong when you can speak again.”
I could blink. I could swallow. I tried one last time to move my limbs, to move anything, but my body felt numb and far away.
“I can’t infect you, but I can temporarily make you a thrall. It’s the only way to do it, for now.” The thing wearing Chloe’s face almost sounded apologetic. “But there’s no need to worry, you’ll be one with the Hive soon.”
Something resonated. The thought of the Hive felt like a ping going off in my head, like I’d been searching for something and could finally name it. Could finally reach out for it, to grasp it.
I still felt drawn to Chloe— no, to the thing that looked like Chloe, to this host, but the pull towards the Hive felt stronger. It felt as if I already knew about the Hive, that everything in life had prepared me for this.
“That’s right, Georgie,” host cooed. “I’m sure you can feel how my venom prepares you to serve the Hive.”
Host rolled me so that I was laying on my back under hos and then straddled me again. Host leaned closer to me, one hand grabbing my chin to force my head to the side as hos lips hovered over my ear.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart,” host whispered, “this next part will feel even better.”
I felt hos tongue circle my ear before covering it entirely with hos mouth. I hardly had to wait before I felt something pushing deeper, that same pinprick piercing my ear drum before everything went dark.
