Know your etxe!
Etxe means house or home in Basque, but it can be found in the name of many places that may be useful to identify when you visit EH.
banketxe: lit. house of the bank; bank office.
erostetxe: lit. house of buying; shop.
espetxe: lit. house of apprehending; prison
gaztetxe: lit. house of the youngsters; a meeting point for activist young people. They usually use abandoned buildings in impoverished neighborhoods and try to bring cultural life to it with art expositions and concerts; the conflicts with the police are usual since they consider them "squatters".
herri-etxe: house of the village; town council
ikastetxe: lit. house of studying; school
jatetxe: literally house of eating; restaurant
kultura-etxe: lit. house of the culture; cultural arts center
osasun-etxe: lit. house of the health; health center
polizia-etxe: lit. police house; police station
putetxe: lit. house of the prostitutes; brothel
suetxe: lit. house of the fire; chimney
zahar-etxe: lit. house of the elders; nursing home.
