E&T-A Doomed Attempt
This takes place a few days before the final procedure ❤
Masterlist
Neteri took a deep breath before knocking on the door to Hjáll’s office. This wasn’t going to go well, was it? Regardless, she had to try. This was life or death, not that she didn’t have a backup plan, but still, if the easy way was going to work...
“You may enter,” she heard through the door. Hjáll was sitting at her desk, leafing through paperwork absentmindedly. There were seats across from the desk, but Neteri remained standing.
“Hjáll, I...I wanted to talk to you about the future of my experiment, if that’s alright.” She fought the urge to wring her hands in front of her.
“What of it? There haven’t been any complications, have there?” Hjáll was looking up now, an eyebrow raised.
Okay but I would like to know how Hjàll treated Erebus in the AU compared to how Neteri treated him in the main story--
ik it's kind of implied with his attitude but I enjoy details
I enjoy details too :)
Partially cuz I'm lazy Erebus probably got captured in much the same way in the AU as he does in canon, and Hjáll filled the same role Neteri did but was generally crueler to him, especially once he became her test subject. Erebus very much did not want to belong to her, but oops I don't fucking care.
She only left him with the ability to speak to make communication easier, but he was muzzled the vast majority of the time he was hers, especially once she gave him fangs. It was really only taken off when she wanted to ask him a question about how something was affecting him or when he was fed (which was not the 3 meals a day Neteri brings him, and it certainly wasn't good food, just nutritious enough to keep him healthy).
The most important thing for her was that he followed her commands, so he was punished pretty harshly if he didn't listen to her. She'd usually attack him with painful magic lighting or drain his strength and manhandle him how she pleased if he didn't obey. He stopped resisting rather quickly since he knew it wasn't worth it, spending most of his days terrified of what Hjáll would do to him next, just trying to keep himself sane enough to survive.
By the time she'd finished with him and gave him to Neteri, he'd given up on ever being a real human again, resigned to just being a captive monster for the rest of his life. And Hjáll made it clear to him that either he was going to belong to Neteri, or he, uh, wouldn't have any sort of future. At all.
For doodle time: Erebus spending some quality wholesome time with Hjáll?
Truly the definition of wholesome <3
Hjáll, I take it you have or have had a couple subjects of your own. Would you like to tell us about them?
"Most of them don't last too long since soul magic is still in its infancy. I do, however, have 76-G, whom I use for physical experiments from time to time. It's very tough and compliant, a real pleasure to work with."
Congratulations, your whumpers have become self aware and know of your machinations behind the fourth wall. How do they react? Who is the most insufferable about their newfound communication? Who is resentful? Who has an existential crisis?
Honestly, Neteri would take it pretty well, just sort of accepting it and then getting incredibly curious about how it even works and what our world is like. She'd be so grateful that she got to have her dear Erebus, and want to make sure I'd never take him away from her, right? ...Right?
Hjáll, on the other hand, would have such an existential crisis and possibly try to kill me or something. There would be so much rage and confusion.
Hjáll, why don't you show us plans of the next addition you'd make to Erebus if he were yours?
"Well, first I'd need to break it, but once that's done...I do think it'd be interesting to try switching out its organs, or maybe another limb. Unfortunately, I couldn't carry out such operations myself as my attribute is lightning magic, not water magic. I could try fusing its soul with something, but I suppose it'd be best if I carry on with Neteri's objective."
(I don't think I've gone over this recently, especially since the ask detailing it was answered way back in my Jairus days, but every person born a wizard is attuned to one of the six elements of magic, and can typically only use spells from their element and the their two sub-attributes. A more in-depth explanation can be found here, and please feel free to ask if you want me to clarify anything or explain it better!)
