not in the loop with the discussion surrounding it but i think the ending of half man was naff. as in the last episode was good, i think the entire show built up to that moment in the prison really well, and in general i loved that scene, but i felt like it was an injustice to all the characters but most of all ruben, that the thing that leads him to killing niall is the fact he slept with his wife/fathered his child. YES there are other things at play but the thing with mona was really painted as the end all be all or at least the catalyst. which is like........idk. boring? lowkey offensive?
i thought in the earlier eps the entire set up with him being so possessive of mona and wanting a kid of his own was kinda on the nose. it DID make sense with the type of man he is, but i was like yeah? i get it? ive met a million men like this i know that a lot of men have this attitude towards the women in their lives why do they keep forcing it? then the ending happened and it felt like oh right, they kept hammering that point just so the ending could be justified and it...wasnt. and it was weird bc at the same time as overdoing the entire mona thing, it also felt very empty and like they didnt actually go into it at all?
idk i dont know what an alternative could have been, but i find it strange to paint ruben as being complex and then give him such an empty, symbolic reasoning for him to kill niall. i know richard gadd is bi, but it is giving "men cant imagine anything worse than another man taking their female sexual property". which again is strange bc the show also shows us that ruben does go through a lot worse than that. i dont have an issue with the fact that they die, i just think the lead up isnt justified (i dont mean morally justified, i mean justified in a storytelling sense). you could argue that the senselessness of it is what makes it all the more tragic, but i dont think it's that kind of senseless violence. that kind of senseless violence that is tragic is more akin to what ruben did to alby. THAT was tragic and it was tragic for multiple people for very complex reasons at once, both at the time it happened but then also later after the confession scene in the prison. that had fucking layers. him killing niall for fucking his wife who he kinda didnt like anyway and was cheating on him and having more fertile cum than him didnt. which is a shame and doesnt gel so good with the rest of the show.
out of interest i wonder if gadd first knew it was going to end with them both killing eachother (or themselves however u want to see it) but had trouble writing the path to get there. anyway. this isnt written out very well maybe ill reword this some time later when i can be arsed. i think i still liked the show but literally the last few moments were such a let down
"i was going to guess theatre studies" "you did all those gay plays at university, didn't you?" "you strike me as a performer in some way" "never have an affair niall, whatever you do"
