A young man gurns into the camera with a cigarette in the corner of his downturned grin, squinting slightly. He has been comically ‘ringed’ with a life-saver bearing the legend HMS CAPRICE out of Rochester. We are on the Kent Coast, probably the garden of a cottage on Spa Esplanade, Herne Bay. It is August, 1919. The young man holds a folding Kodak camera in his right hand. Is he the brother of the girl with the spyglass?
