The flight deck of HMS Hermes with Harriers of No. 800 Squadron FAA, heading for the South Atlantic in April 1982. The squadron lost two aircraft during the Falklands War, one by accident and another shot down during an attack on Goose Green. They destroyed 13 enemy aircraft.

HMS Belle Poule launched in 1802 and was put into French service with 40 guns. In 1806 she was captured by the Royal Navy. And in 1808 she starts with the active service again. In 1812 during the War of 1812 Belle Poule patrolled the Western Approaches, capturing numerous American merchant vessels and Privateers. On 30 April 1812, she  and HMS Hermes , a 20- gun sloop  captured the American privateer schooner Gipsy or Gipsey, out of New York, in the middle of the Atlantic and after a three-day chase. Gipsey surrendered twice to Hermes and twice got away again before Belle Poule caught her.

Royal Navy F4K Phantom of 700 Squadron, of Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, overflies the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes, during trials. 700 Squadron was the first Phantom Squadron in the UK.
