Wait For It Research (Tuesday, 16th of October 2018)
We have been asked to upload various images to our tumblr blogs to inspire us for the “Wait For It” project. This photographic assignment requires us to find a location where the light and composition is perfect. We must be patient and resilient for this particular photographic project as it is incredibly rare to have sunshine in Glasgow!
We can optimise and print this project in colour or black and white, which is why I have uploaded a number of images in each optimisation. The above images have all been screenshotted from @friendsinperson on Instagram.
HND2A - WORKSHOP - Lighting Set Up
Various lighting techniques (that can be used for white shirts/fashion).
1 - A pop-up, portable backdrop/soft box - with zips in either side that allow you to place in lights. Didn’t use this but were shown how it works.
2 - A grey collapsable backdrop in front of a light with GoBo attachment, various different shapes/patterns are available to give a dabbled light effect on the subject.
3 - Ring flash and power unit - shoot through the ring, camera attachment. Background was just against the wall.
4 - Two full length strip lights on either side to create a rim light effect and a beauty dish angled from high up, pointing down onto the subjects face.
5 - Set up is described as a ‘clam’ because of the shape of the large soft box , with the foam reflector board angled below it. Reflectors on either side, all supported by chairs and a backdrop stand keeping the soft box up. White background.
6 - In the corner backdrop there's a large light stand with beauty dish attachment, pointing down into the area, the tri-reflector bounces light all around the subject (supposed to create nice catch lights in the eyes).
7 - David Eustace style backdrop aka. old army material set up with large soft box above model, slightly angled. Additional smaller soft box lower down on other side to fill any shadows.
8 - Four lights with basic attachments and all on the same power settings, reflect light off of three white foam boards and over onto area where sitter is on the box. Yellow background.
9- Octabox - octagon shaped soft box, very large, sits on floor and comes with power pack. Background was the wall.
HND2A PROJECT - ‘Group Portrait’
Brief - Organise a group shot using a minimum of 3 people. You may interpret the brief in a variety of ways, the end product should be a group of sitters photographed on location with supplementary controlled lighting. The location should reflect the character of your sitters and be accessible to your group. Control of your group is important - the main use of ‘social photography’ is to make money- make them look good! Good location, controlled lighting, co-ordinated styling, effective communication, effective posing/composition. Parental consents for anyone under the age of 16.

My options for this brief are either a family portrait shot or band photography. Above are some examples of the kind of style of images I would want to achieve.
HND2A - WORKSHOP - ‘Fashion Set Building’
Aim - in groups build a set/ backdrop for a fashion portrait photograph, using items proved or sourced in and around the college. Discuss and plan before hand.
Research - Inspiration - Irving Penn, David Eustace.
Development - My team started out as a smaller group of 3, in this team we discussed the general theme/ idea we were going for. We looked at the work of Irving Penn and used the corner set up as our main background which ties in with the iconic images that Penn took. We worked well as a team and all had a very similar vision for the set. Unfortuately when it came to actually building the set there were only 2 of us and so we decided to work together to build the set and have it as more of a fashion/ clothes only advertisement photo. We matched together things that we felt worked well together and were a but more quirky and out of the box. We used a stool that we got from the art department upstairs, a dust-protecting sheet from the downstairs building site department, the frames we also borrowed off another department which we then hung up with string and difficulty. The hangers, I got those, the case was already in the room and both of us luckily happened to be wearing matching check shirts.
Maybe the point of the exercise was to build a set, but we did that in a different way - none of us being good at arts and crafts projects, we decided to construct it using already made objects - but that still involved a lot that is good practice for future projects - resources, constructing the set, problem solving when things went wrong.
Alamy Submission. Finally I was able to pass quality control, after giving up in folio 1. I decided to go with some images from the fragments project to pass quality control, and will later add the rest and I also uploaded my graded unit images from first year. It was a slow start but maybe something good will come from it.
Business Card Final. This was my final result back in folio 1 for my business cards. I didn't want something too busy, I wanted something simple, easy to read and eye catching. I also chose 3 different images as I wasn’t sure what kind of photography I was really passionate about yet and so one was sports, another portrait and the other still life which could also just be a logo. Also, because I chose 3 designs in the one pack I had to be general so it just says Photography. I used Moo and I am really happy with the results, they are clean and smooth. I will use them again as their guide was easy to use.
EXHIBITION REVIEW
Name- Caitlin Brown Class- HND2A Name of Exhibition- HND2 Photography End of Year Exhibition Location- Theatre Royal
1. How does the flyer/poster advertise the Exhibition? The poster works well giving the need to know details with bold writing. It features a high class fashion portrait that is very clean and beautiful. Despite the fact that there is a variety of different types of photography it reflects the standard and quality of the HND photographers.
2. What is the suitability of gallery space? How is the exhibition laid out? It’s based in the Theatre Royal on 2 floors. It’s a fancy venue, spiral stairs with portraits on the first floor and landscapes on the second with space and seating around.
3. How has the work been mounted? Is this appropriate for the work? They are mounted on white boards with black frames on A3 canvases. The work is matched with other work that connects well. Due to the varied projects, the same black frames on canvas equally allows the exhibition to flow and connect as a whole.
4. Who made the work? HND2 students of City of Glasgow College
5. Who did they make it for, who is the audience? It’s the celebration of the end of the second year of HND. It’s our best work (which were chosen through a workshop of prints). The audience is other students, families and friends, artists, photographers, creatives, potential employers, strangers- anyone.
6. How does it make you feel? It makes me feel proud, excited, relieved and anxious for the future as college is about to end aswell as grateful for what college has taught me.
7. If the work has a title does it make you think about images differently? I do feel like a title does impact the way you think about something or expect/imagine. This title helps people know it’s students work- diverse group of work so can attract large numbers of people that have different tastes.
8. How would I describe it to someone later? A great collection of ranging subjects produced by talented students. Shows the hard work paid off.
9. Does the photographs make you want to ask questions, what are these? Some images I looked at I wondered how they took it- what equipment they used, where they took it and in some cases they were to intriguing and abstract that I wanted to know what the photo was
10/11. Is the photograph valuable? How do you know? Is work for sale and who might buy? £120 framed, £90 unframed. A lot of hand work has been put into them and standard is high. Yes. Anyone who likes the image may buy it- photographers, family and friends, artists and creatives etc.
12. What information is available about artists? On boards our names were below frames, Poster- HND City of Glasgow and if business cards were picked up- further links to portfolio and social media is available. But overall was minimal.
13. Who Organised the Exhibition and who selected the work? Lecturers selected the date, location, frames and size on canvases. Students and lecturers helped to choose images in workshop where we were to bring 6 small 6x4 prints to narrow down for final 2 per student- which was ultimately our decision.
