So this is a section from the next chapter of my Kingkay fic that I’m currently working on, but I thought it could also work as a oneshot too to help push my agenda of giving faceless characters in the epilogue life 😂
Pairing - Brooks/Miller fwb hinted. It’s also hinted that Brooks suspects kingkay.
I have given a hc for their appearance which you can find here
Miller leaned against one of the tables in the briefing room, coffee in hand and another one next to him as he waited for his partner to arrive. It felt good to finally not need to wear the hazard suits when stepping into the base. Multiple blood tests had been run on the four and all had come back clear, so that meant others got the all clear to no longer need the suits. Miller hated those things every time he has to wear one, they’re so overheating especially if he’s spending long hours in it. In a hot country such as Iraq too? It’s just not a good combination. He’s happy to be free of it.
It was kind of insane to think about as he looked around the briefing room. The fact it was part of a previously a normal intended mission unaware of what would take place hours later. All now a memory of the horrific ordeal. It wouldn’t be the first time Agent Jake Miller had seen cases similar to this, but this one in particular did give him the shivers at times just thinking about it as he lay awake at night in the cot in one of the rooms on base away from the quarantine area. Even now just sitting in the briefing room it gave him the shivers.
Most days he’s in office working behind the scenes on these investigations, so sometimes it feels like a treat to get out into these situations where he has to look over survivors. This one in particular though? He couldn’t help but feel on edge about what’s down below. At least Brooks was along for the ride.
Speaking of Brooks, Miller heard the soft thump of boots against the floor causing him to be pulled out his thoughts and turn to face the source of sound. Agent Hayley Brooks had come strolling in, her long curled hair tied in a low pony tail. She wore long combat pants and a typical plain t-shirt. Although the outfit was simple just to suit the warm conditions, it fit well on her and definitely had Miller trailing his eyes up and down to check her out. Brooks knew he’d like it.
Brooks smirked as she came over. “One of those for me?” she asked as Miller gave a small hum and passed her the coffee cup. Brooks came to lean against the table too, side by side with him.
“Agent Clark give you any updates on the new recruit?” he asked as he passed the cup to her. Ah, Salim Othman. The enemy combatant that Lieutenant Kolchek allied with and had left quite the impression. Enough that their boss wanted to find and recruit him.
“Salim?” she asked even if she knew who he was talking about after taking a sip of her coffee. Miller knew Brooks was basically one of Special Agent Mary-Jane Clark’s favourites (after Rachel). He knew she had been calling her to ask for updates from them about the team. The boss was bound to share some updates on how Salim was settling into the country.
“Seems to be settling in well at Mary-Jane’s place from what she’s told me over the phone. The kid too,” she answered before taking another sip of her coffee.
Today was about sharing the next steps to the survivors here. Special Agent Mary-Jane Clark is a leader in the CIA, Rachel King’s mentor when she had first joined to be precise. She was planning to recruit the four survivors here in quarantine into her team that Brooks, Miller and a few others were already a part of. A office based/investigation team back in the US but with focus on supernatural cases, the kind that stop future monster attacks. Due to the seriousness of it, the team was quite secret, even within the CIA.
Agent Clark had already recruited Salim, found him earlier before he and his son could leave the country. She even questioned him in his own home, Brooks and Miller were both present for that. Turns out after reading the other briefings and hearing what he had to say, she liked what she heard. In a way took a special liking to him and his skills so that’s how she made the decision to recruit him, brought both him and Zain to the US with her, and the two were currently hanging out in her apartment using the couch and spare bedroom to settle in until the four get flown back.
Today was about Brooks and Miller delivering the information to Rachel, Eric, Nick and Jason about their new jobs. Rachel had a phone call with Agent Clark earlier so she already had a bit of an idea of her new job but not the full context of things yet. Agent Clark having a soft spot for Rachel was bound to tell her in advance. To Brooks and Miller based on what they’ve heard about the boss’ past with Rachel and being a woman that bends to rules, it was no surprise that she snatched up the opportunity to recruit the five survivors.
“What do you think of this Salim guy?” asked Miller in curiosity. Miller wasn’t entirely sure how to feel about him yet as it was early days. He must admit he was impressed at what Salim had to say during Agent Clark’s questioning. Whatever Miller feels about the guy, he was now part of their team.
Brooks shrugged before this playful look flashed in her eyes.
“I think he’s handsome,” she answered before bringing the coffee cup back up to her lips again and adding “got that whole protective dad slash vampire slayer thing going on.”
Miller won’t lie, he’s in agreement at her statement, but he couldn’t help this burn of jealousy even if he was certain that Brooks purposefully said that to get a jealous reaction from him. Miller furrowed his brows at her answer.
“Okay, you wanna invite him to join us next time we hook up?” he asked in bafflement which had Brooks’ brows raising in surprise at that.
“Really?”
“No!” he answered, voice slightly raised that it made his voice break a little. Miller’s voice always goes a little higher when he’s jealous. Brooks pressed her lips tight as she tried not to look so amused at the clear jealously in him, maybe she shouldn’t joke but she does like riling him up sometimes. The opportunity was right there for it.
“I’m just messing with you, you’re the only one in my bed Jake,” she teased, her voice going lower and more flirtatious while playfully nudging him. Miller softly hummed at that while nodding his head. Like he suspected, she was trying to playfully rile him up.
“Yeah, I should hope so!” Miller exclaimed in response before taking a sip of his own coffee, listening to Brooks’ amused chuckles.
“But honestly I think he’ll be a good addition to the team,” she clarified while taking another sip of her coffee. “He seems calm while also having a clear head. It’s what we need in a job like this,” she added and Miller nodded in agreement.
“What do you think of him?” she asked next as Miller gave a shrug.
“He’s got the skills I’ll give him that, even if it’s not really needed for this job,” answered Miller. This job was more behind the scenes, investigating intel and crime scenes, sending others out and doing what Brooks and Miller do, a lot of questioning and debriefing. Either way, he understands why Special Agent Clark has taken a liking to him and what a good asset he’d be.
“What about the others?” added Miller as Brooks raised her brows which caught Miller’s attention. It was like she knew something and Miller was eager to know what it was. Miller placed his cup down and folded his arms, leaning a little closer to his partner. Brooks poked the inside of her cheek with her tongue and leaned closer to him.
“Eric and Rachel are married, right?” she started.
“So I hear,”
“Well, I’ve noticed neither seem to be wearing their rings,” Brooks added and Miller couldn’t help but raise his brows. Now that he thinks about it the two seemed to be actively avoiding each other. He has not seen the two of them around each other much apart from an awkward greeting when they see each other.
“You think they’re divorced?”
“I’m sure they’ll be getting one once they’re back home!” she exclaimed. “I’m just saying…does not look like a happy marriage.”
The topic had Miller thinking about his other observations he had noticed. While the Kings stayed away from each other, he noticed how Eric King seemed to have this friendship going on with Nick Kay. Brooks furrowed her brows as she noticed the look on his face and now she couldn’t help but place her cup down and cross her arms eager to hear more.
“You noticed something?” she asked, curiosity and eagerness filling her voice. Miller gave a half hearted hum, slightly tilting his head a little while thinking back on something.
“I have noticed Colonel King spending a lot of time with Sergeant Kay,” he said and Brooks’ eyes practically twinkled with excitement.
“So you’ve noticed it too!” exclaimed Brooks and Miller couldn’t help but feel out of the loop to whatever Brooks was suggesting.
“What? What’s so important about that?”
“Oh, Jake! I hear that Nick Kay was butting heads with the Colonel when the mission started!” Brooks sounded excited as she shared this, confident in her explanation.
“The two seem to have grown close and are now always at each other’s side?!”
“I still don’t get what you’re hinting at,” commented Miller, shaking his head a little in confusion and Brooks deeply chuckled, picking her cup back up to bring to her lips.
“Just an observation,” she muttered before taking a sip. Miller shook his head at that because he decided it was best not to question further whatever Brooks was suggesting. Eventually Brooks had finished her coffee and placed the cup down on the table she was leaning on before standing up and fixing herself to get ready for this small briefing.
Before she could get going, Miller’s hand reached for hers, gently pulling her towards him.
“You think you have time to meet up tonight?” he asked, voice low and seductive. An amused chuckle came from Brooks, she had hoped he’d ask. Her eyes trailed him up and down, admiring his broad chest in the shirt that hugged it well before looking back up at his face.
“I think I can fit you in,” she said, voice almost like a purr as her head was playfully tilted and eyelids slightly hooded as she looked back at him. Miller smiled at that, leaning up to kiss her only for Brooks to teasingly pull back, slightly raising one brow at Miller who was raising a brow back at her.
“Save the kisses for later,” she whispered with a smile as Miller smirked at her.
“Well I have endless reserves of kisses for you,”
“That makes me feel special,”
“You should feel special.”
“Okay, but seriously we have to start this briefing otherwise Agent Clark will be on the phone lecturing our asses!” she sighed before stepping back from Miller’s embrace but holding a hand for him. Miller didn’t need help to stand up from leaning on the table, but he will always take the opportunity to take her hand if she’s offering.
“True…that woman is not one you wanna piss off,” sighed Miller as he was back on his feet.
“Exactly, so let’s round them up!” she ordered as she headed for the door with Miller following behind and allowing her to take the lead.
Thought I’d revisit some old headcanons I made a while back and add more because it’s just fun to bring some faceless npcs in the epilogue of the game to life 🥰
- Full Names: Hayley Brooks and Jake Miller
Face models (just based on the vibes they give me)
Brooks: Zara Sparkes (Julia in MoM, Marie in TDIM & Anders in D8020). Brown eyes, long dark brown hair that’s tied back into a low ponytail, hair is also curly, curled curtain bangs with a parting.
Miller: Leonardo Patane (Cooper in MoM, Carver in LH, Jeff in TDIM, possibly debatable if potentially Thomas Carter in D8020). Very similar in appearance to Jeff in TDIM.
- They have been working in supernatural cases for years. It’s kind of the norm for them at this point.
- They are earlier members of my OC Special Agent Mary-Jane Clark’s team. I do have a hc post about that here
- Both love horror movies. Miller has his limits with certain things but Brooks isn’t really fazed by movie gore. She will tease Miller a little about it. Brooks is also the kind of girl to make a gingerbread house version of the saw bathroom like in those memes while Miller questions what is wrong with her.
- That being said, the House of Ashes case did freak Brooks out as much as she tries to hide how she feels about it. It’s why she asked Miller’s opinion on it.
- Miller has a sweet tooth (“good fucking muffins”). If Miller is in a bad mood, getting him something sweet will put you in his good books.
- Brooks loves cheesy pop music and anything that’s popular on the radio. Miller tries to pretend he’s not into this stuff but he will be quietly singing Britney Spears to himself because he’s heard Brooks none stop singing.
- Brooks and Miller have a fwb relationship. It’s casual for them and kind of a known secret on the team, and Agent Clark in this instance does not want the details for.
- Brooks finds herself developing a friendship with Rachel. Both who have worked with Agent Clark closely in their careers at different points had brought them together.
- Miller finds himself getting along with Eric the most out of the five survivors. Miller is a little nerdy which is why him and Eric find themselves getting along.
- Brooks has a cat while Miller has a dog.
- Both are huge gossips and Agent Clark knows it. “you’ve got your goddamn noses in everyone’s business, so what’s the latest?” Is a phrase that Agent Clark has said to both of them before.
Following my HoA gang living together headcanon post, I mentioned their job so heres a full headcanon au post around it.
Tagging: @108garys @the-rat-child
Feel free to add your own headcanons to this 🥰
- The group were recruited onto an investigation team that focuses on supernatural cases in the US. The team is run by on Oc of mine Special Agent Mary-Jane Clark (same face model as Angela from Little Hope).
- Agent Clark was one of Rachel’s mentors when Rachel first started her career so she has a soft spot for Rachel which is why she recruited her and the others onto the team. She knows what Rachel is capable of so it was easy to vouch for her.
- She took a particular interest in Salim because of the reports from the others and his skill, so she recruited him too to join the others. She did have Zain fly over to the US with Salim too (because while she’s stern, she is not heartless) for those months until Zain starts his studies.
- She assigned Jason to partner up with him, but it worked out anyway as the five of them decided to get a house (including Zain).
- Like I stated in my previous post, the work is mainly office based and investigations, but they take action when necessary. Work is very secretive since it’s all focused on the supernatural and they have to do things discreetly.
- Along with Rachel, Jason, Salim, Eric and Nick. The team consists of Agent Clark, Brooks and Miller (I’ve decided to Hc their first names as Hayley and Jake and the same face models as Marie and Jeff from tdim) and many more individuals who have been in similar situations to the HoA gang (all with military background or agents that have faced supernatural cases). Note: if anyone wants to use this au or create a character for it, feel free to!
- While it’s a comfortable size team, the main five seem to stick together due to their experience in the temple. It brought them close that they see each other as family. They feel a little out of place from everyone at times.
- There are occasions where there has been some sort of relationship drama in the team but surprisingly not involving any of the HoA gang. But do they watch and take in the drama? Absolutely!
- Brooks and Miller have a fwb relationship. It’s kind of a known secret in the office.
- Brooks and Miller are kind of the gossips of the team. Agent Clark tries to deny it but sometimes she wants the scoop on rumours and will go to those two to find out. In Agent Clark’s words “you’ve got your goddamn noses in everyone’s business, so what’s the latest?”. They act shocked by her comment, but they know it’s true 😪
- She highly suspects Jason and Salim but doesn’t say anything as long as it is not affecting work. She also suspects Eric and Nick and also knows of Brooks and Miller but absolutely does not want the details.
- Nick and Eric grow closer and people start suspecting the two when noticing how close they are.
- I like to hc that before the checkpoint, Nick was quite the dork and Eric before his accident was quite similar. So they actually meet each others energy well. Nick starts to fall for Eric’s cheeky smile and subtle playful teasing he never knew the Colonel was capable of. (He just assumed Eric was a stuck up asshole when he first met him).
- One time with the both lack of sleep the night before (due to multiple restless sleeps after the events of HoA) and high caffeine intake to try and stay awake for work, the two got told to leave the meeting room as they broke into fits of laughter after Miller’s voice broke while answering something. They were already in a giggly mood before that but that was the final straw for Agent Clark to tell them to leave the meeting. Luckily it wasn’t any serious that they missed, and it definitely started the team questioning their relationship.
- There’s no rules about relationships in the team, as long as it’s not going to affect work then Agent Clark has no issues. But she will not stand for PDA!
I’m bored and in the mood to bring to life characters with no faces and a few minutes of screen time at the end of house of ashes. So here’s some Brooks and Miller headcanons below
Brooks
- I’m going to assume Brooks is her last name so I’ve decided to name her Agent Hayley Brooks.
- face model: Zara Sparkes (Julia MoM and Marie TDIM)
- Without the hazard suit, she’s a brunette, long curled hair that is tied back in a low ponytail when she’s in office, and of course the trademark dpa winged eyeliner.
- She loves horror movies which definitely influences her job and why the incident of hoa did not phase her much (not the first case she’s seen).
- Likes early 2000s pop music
- Brooks is someone that is very confident in herself and her sexuality. She’s very sex positive.
- She’s also got a friends/co workers with benefits thing going on with Miller
- She also has an attraction to Eric and Nick but would never pursue anything (unless they wanted to)
- Has a small scar on her collar bone from an incident as a child where she had gotten too adventurous and ended up getting hurt.
Miller
- Again, I’m assuming that’s his last name. So I’ve named him Agent Jake Miller
- Face model: Leonardo Patane (Carver LH and Jeff TDIM)
- Without the hazard suit, he has brown hair and a short beard (basically how Jeff in tdim looks).
- Also forms a partnership with Rachel since they work in office together but Brooks is closer to Rachel.
- Also likes horror movies and again, these cases do not hugely phase him because it’s not the first that he has seen.
- Has a friend/co worker with benefits relationship with Brooks. It is casual between the two.
- Has a bullet scar on his side (only Brooks has seen it *wink wink*)
- Denies liking pop music but because Brooks is always playing stuff on the radio, he finds himself singing along.
