ok but the scene where they lead the orcs away
I know it’s a movie addition that it was intentional but it makes me feel things
It wasn’t a “oh gnomes, we were in the wrong place at the wrong time” it was a “we’re willing to sacrifice our lives just to let our friend have a chance at saving the world” thing
Merry knew what would happen when he suggested it—but they both did it anyway and it shows their loyalty and courage in a way that makes characters become my favourites
Acts of courage even when a character knows they stand no chance at what or who they’re going up against as a result (especially when it’s to help someone else) really gets me
