In the interest of levity, what is your go-to comfort film (or films!) out of Boris's filmography? The kind of movie you grab when you're having a rough day and could use something comfortingly familiar to throw on?

Oooh, this is tough. But honestly, I'm stuck between "The Black Room" and "The Terror," though any of them help me through a rough day.

I adore all the films he's made, of course, but watching him play a benevolent and disabled twin who falls hard for anyone he loves warms me like I've imbibed the warmest cup of hot chocolate. He's so incredibly soft, obliviously sweet, and vulnerable in that film that it drives me mad.

And then, because I'm weird with loving pitiful, angsty characters, I love watching him play an old baron who's clearly guilt-ridden. Call me toxic, but seeing him be so remorseful after killing his fornicating wife just does something to me. I love seeing men act pathetic and lovelorn, so watching him act like an old drama teacher who's too deep in the role of a melancholic fool is comforting in a strange way to me. I need a man who's willing to relinquish his will to life, but not before I take him down with me in the crypt as it floods.

I know we don't talk a lot, but I just wanna say that I love your gifs, your streams, your writing, and just your general presence in the 'Phantom' fandom, and I always appreciate when you tag me in something or drop a question in my inbox, so thank you!

Gah, thank you! I have similar feelings, in that I know we don’t talk a lot but you have such a cool blog/vibe/aesthetic and I always enjoy hearing your take on things! (Thank you for your other ask as well, which I will try to answer tomorrow because I’m falling asleep!)

Favorite character - Gotta go with Meg Giry. So brave, kind, and adorable. A deadly combo. And in the book, she’s entertaining as hell, the saucy little minx.

Second favorite character - Everyone’s favorite sewer goblin, Monsieur Erik.

Least favorite character - Really not into Philippe. Rich douchebag. 

The character I’m most like - Probably Christine. Dreamy and fatally naive, but we both mean well!

Favorite pairing - Toss up between Erik/Meg and Raoul/Christine.

Least favorite pairing - Mmmmm…gotta say Raoul/Meg. I see them having a brother/sister dynamic instead.

Favorite moment - Tough to decide between Angel of Music ( “don’t be frightened” MEG, YOU’RE THE ANGEL), Meg comforting Christine during the Don Juan rehearsal (again, Meg is an angel), and Meg beating everyone to the lair and picking up Erik’s mask (tiny brave heroines ftw, plus if you squint hard enough, there’s lots of fodder for Erik x Meg fic just after the curtain drops).

Rating out of 10 - Book? Seven out of ten. Not the most beautifully written novel of its time, but it planted the seed for a whole multiverse of stuff. Musical? Eight out of ten. Gorgeous music with a wonderfully eerie setting, and soooo much potential for great characters, but as it is, the characters overall do come off more as archetypes than fully fleshed out people. Still, it’s what got me hooked on the story, so it will always hold the most special place in my heart. It’s where most of my headcanons come from, after all.

Inner Sanctum is perfect for Halloween! I'd highly recommend the episodes 'Death Across The Board' and their adaptation of 'The Tell-Tale Heart', both are super-good. I also highly recommend Suspense Theater episodes 'The Hands of Mr. Ottermole' and 'The Man Who Knew How', they're suitably unsettling for this time of year! Enjoy!

Thanks for the recs! I haven’t listened to much of Inner Sanctum yet so I’ll give them a listen. I think I might have listened to The Hands of Mr. Ottermole at one point but I can’t remember the plot so I’ll have to revisit it.

I'm here for the distraction/cheering up, if I can! If you could've cast Boris in any role, any role at all, what would it have been? And which actor would you have liked to have seen him act opposite, either more than he did previously, or one he'd never worked with before?

I had to think about this for a few minutes, but I would have loved to have seen mon cher play Lord Ruthven! If anyone doesn't know who he is, he's one of the very first literary vampires written by Polidori, and coincidentally, he was modeled after Lord Byron. He's not a Victorian creation, but a Georgian one. I know the character is said to be pale and anemic-looking, if not ghoulish, but I think if they used a kind of palette for him like they used in "Black Sabbath," he would look intimidating as a well-groomed ghoul.

As for Aubrey, the hero of the story so to speak, I would've loved to have had him act alongside Buster Keaton! I know they were at that baseball game, and even though Buster was a wonderful stuntman and actor, I loved him in "The General," looks and acting wise. I think together the two would've made a fantastic picture, and he certainly could've had a go at playing a fated man who tries to protect his sister and triumph over the forces of darkness. The man was so good at what he did, and he remains a favorite for sure!

Hey! I recently rewatched "Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", so I thought I'd ask your thoughts about Boris's Jekyll! I admit, I watched it as a kid, long before I saw the Fredric March version, so I tend to think of his version of the character first!

Alas, how could anyone forget Fredric's wonderful version? In all honesty, even though the A&C one is comedic, I have to say that all other Jekylls pale in comparison to the original!

Without a doubt though, mon cher presents himself as a suave, sensual and narcissistic doctor, of course and seeing him profess his "love" to a woman quite a few years his junior (obviously) was rather heart pounding. Is it wrong with how he words it? Oh yes. Is it still somehow husky and inviting to listen to, even though the gruffness of his advancement is strong? Yes, and I melt any way. 🥲

Leave it to him to come off as someone conniving and wounded all the same. Such an egocentric paramour, indeed. He was so good at ushering in many different emotions at the same time, it's almost hard to realize he was acting, even in a film with comedic chops! And the man himself had a great sense of humor, too, as any one of his friends and costars could confirm. The man is simply indescribable.
