hobo d - permeations mix
austin's famed applied pressure crew has a resident crate-digger amongst their arsenal of turntablists, rappers, keyboardists, speaker-bumpers, etc. his name is patrick murray but he goes by hobo d. the man is a walking encyclopedia, to put it simply. he's been living in south korea for the past year, and today is his birthday. here's an excerpt from one of his live sets.
this mix is an accurate depiction of how his brain works, from a musical standpoint. some names that might help paint the picture include el-p, gaslamp killer, mophono, and quantic. there will be a lot of unfamiliar tunes throughout this mix, perhaps 100% worth in many cases, but your curiosity will be piqued and your senses engaged through the decisively original voyage. i especially liked how the vocal line from the pharcyde's 'she keeps on passing me by' was thoroughly desecrated at one point, glitched into oblivion, over a haunting backdrop of atmospheric string chords....eventually to subside into what sounds like dreamy ethiopian jazz. to condense this hour-plus mix into a single sentence, i would say that it features the fusion of psychedelic beats with world music, with a notable emphasis on tasty drum kits. more appropriately though, if you've ever used the term 'genre-lessness' (or a similar, perhaps more real word) as a positive descriptor of a dj, then this erudite fella's got your best interests in mind.
