While each of the “Hockius playerous” species exhibit quick reflexes, some members of the family group (called a “team”) develop a particularly keen protective instinct. These natural guardians develop a thick exoskeleton-like layer. This allows them to provide a line of defense against members of rival teams and rubber projectile discs. Following a successful display of defensive measures, these large creatures (commonly referred to by researchers as “goalies”) receive head-bumps and hugs from fellow team members. This action is both affectionate and celebratory.
