The new town I'm living in is surrounded by such beautiful classic Dutch scenery. As a kid growing up in a newly-built city, landscapes like this were what I dreamt of. After always being on the move for such a long time, now being stuck here in one place during quarantaine allows me to really fully get to know this new area. I'm so grateful to be able to spend my time outside, having the time to discover all these new wonderful places. There's so much beauty to be found, everywhere. Everywhere I go, I have the intention to look for and find beauty.

In de Romeinse tijd werden de rivieren rond het eiland IJsselmonde en de Hoeksche Waard al druk bevaren. De vele zij-armen van de Maas vormden een goede natuurlijke haven en op verschillende plekken ontstonden nederzettingen van de Romeinen en/of lokale stammen. Rond 270 verdwenen de Romeinen uit de streek en verzande ook de Maas. De nederzettingen verdwenen weer tot de vroege Middeleeuwen. Rond 1100 ontstonden er wederom nederzettingen, toen de rivier na overstromingen weer beter begaanbaar was. Op diverse plekken werden mottes gebouwd. Een motte was een kleine verstevigde plek waar de omringende bewoners zich konden terugtrekken in geval van nood. Vaak waren het eenvoudige stenen torens, omringd door slotgrachten. Later groeiden deze mottes vaak uit tot kastelen en burchten. In het gebied de Oeverlanden kun je prachtig wandelen en is zo’n kleine motte gereconstrueerd. De natuur is er prachtig en een wandeling is aan te raden! ——————- The area around the islands of IJsselmonde and the Hoeksche Waard was a busy crossroad during Roman occupation from aroun the year 30 until 270. Ships passed through and commerce flourished. After the Roman troops left, many settlements disappeared. Around 1100 the waterways became better accessible and settlements returned. Many of these settlements were build near a ‘motte’. A motte is a small stronghold, mainly consisting of one strong tower which was surrounded by a canal. At the beautiful Oeverlanden park one of these mottes was recreated. 1888 is een belangrijk jaar voor de Hoeksche Waard. In dat jaar wordt de Brug over de Oude Maas geopend. Het is de eerste verbinding vanuit de Hoeksche Waard waarbij een van de omringende rivieren kan worden overgestoken zonder veer. De brug krijgt een stoomtram, waarmee de Hoeksche Waard definitief ontsloten wordt. In de 20e eeuw neemt de scheepvaart toe en wordt de originele draaibrug omgebouwd tot de grootste hefbrug van Europa! Tijdens de inval van Duitse troepen in mei 1940 weten Nederlandse soldaten 5 tanks uit te schakelen op de brug. Toch is de overmacht te groot en kunnen Duitsers via de brug opstoten naar Rotterdam. Na de oorlog wordt de Hoeksche Waard populair als woonplaats voor Rotterdammers. Ook neemt de scheepvaart enorm toe op de Oude Maas. Doordat schepen altijd voorrang hebben, opent de brug tientallen keren per dag. Enorme files vormen zich dagelijks, aan de Barendrechtse zijde soms tot Rotterdam-Zuid. In 1969 wordt daarom de Heinenoordtunnel geopend. De brug is niet meer nodig en wordt in 1970 gesloopt. Aan de Barendrechtse zijde herinneren een tweetal brugwachtershuisjes en een deel van de Hefbrug aan deze bijzondere brug. —————— In 1888 a bridge was opened which connected the islands of the Hoeksche Waard and IJsselmonde. A steam tram became a major connection towards the city of Rotterdam. In the 20th century shipping increased on the river and the largest lift bridge of Europe was build. On May 13th 1940 German panzers reached the bridge. Although 5 panzers were hit by defending Dutch forces, the bridge was taken and Rotterdam could be reached. After the war the increase in traffic over the bridge, as well as in the river, let to enormous traffic jams. Therefore a tunnel was build and the bridge became absolete.
