The Joker is such a timeless villain…He is “detachment” personified. His thesis is chaos and anarchy with one singular message: everything burns. So what would happen if the Joker, against his every inclination, becomes attached to another person? What if that person was a little girl, originally used as a plot device with which to draw out an absent Batman? What if the Joker realized, as she grew up, that the only person truly ensnared by her was himself? Naturally, just like everything else, the Joker would burn her too (it is his theme after all). Except…in this case, the Joker’s gonna make her need him (it’s only what she deserves for making him get all attached in the first place). And when he does inevitably light the match that sets her aflame, she’ll fall on her knees and thank him for ending the darkness.
Engagemachine (hoistthecolours) has been writing fics about the Joker for over ten years. She knows him and writes him like no one else I have ever read. Her world-building is extraordinary, all-consuming, and her characterization of the Joker is simply unprecedented. Next-fucking-level. It will make you hate him or love him but either way, you’ll be obsessed with him. You’ll be obsessed with THEM.
BURN is one of those rare stories that will stay with you long after you’ve read it. It will creep into your dreams, it will break your heart, it will make you yearn, and it will most assuredly leave you foaming at the mouth for more. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is the third part of a series, beginning with the first story called, “Clockwork” (ff.net under the pseudonym hoistthecolours) which is the story about the OFC when she was a little girl and had just met the Joker.
