PM: Thanks, Holden! Are you here yet?
Promposal: Take #2 || HOLVE
WHO: Holden Evans and Clove Motta WHEN: Friday Morning 5/6/16 WHERE: Clove’s Locker WHAT: Holden attempts to ask Clove to prom for the second time, and things still don’t go how Holden hoped they would.
Holden was never on time to school so, getting there super early and trying to be covert was something he failed out. He never fully thought through his plan of his. Stuffing a locker full of ping pong balls and being able to shut it was going to be hard enough but getting inside her locker was the battle he had to get through at the moment. He found a janitor and played off him being there as because he needed to get a book to finish a paper and he needed a good grade on it to pass. The lady seemed generous and gave him a concerned look when she open it and clearly noticed it was a girls locker and not his. “I just really like this kind of stuff, don’t judge,” he joked as he held up his bad of stuff and showed her. She nodded and gave him a quick good luck as she moved on her way. He stuffed them all into her locker and quickly shut it, only ten or so not staying inside like he had planned. “So that’s about two hundred plus balls and there is no way I’m cleaning this shit up after,” he mumbled to himself as he went about his morning. Returning to school he waited near her locker, hoping his plan didn’t fail once more.
Clove had generally calmed down from the original promposal debacle, and assumed that Holden had moved on to asking someone else. She debated if she was even going to go to prom at this point, but she hadn't made any final decisions. Right now, she was just worrying catching up on all of her work from the week before. Clove was fairly lost in her thoughts, not really paying attention to where she was even going as she walked to her locker to get her books for her first class. Opening her locker, she was less than expecting when what seemed like a never ending supply of ping pong balls came pouring out at her, some even managing to fall on her. They practically filled the floor around her locker, and she let out a gasp, looking around confused. Practically everyone was staring at her, and she could feel her face turn bright red, when she looked down again, she noticed that all of the balls had 'prom?' written on them, and she looked up with wide eyes, feeling a familiar form of anger wash over her.
Holden took his place, watching from a good distance away as she approached her locker. The moment of truth was quickly approaching and part of him was starting to second guess this idea all together. He was filled with excitement but nervousness soon took over his body as she started to lift the small metal clip. ‘Oh my fucking god, that was better than I had expected the whole floor is cover - shit,’ he thought to himself as he watched her face grow angrier by the second. The flowers in his hand were going to do him no good at this point. Handing them to some random girl as she walked passed him he slowly made his way over to her with his sign that he had planned on holding up for the whole school to see. It read ‘I finally got the balls to ask you to prom.’ “I take it this wasn’t the way to go about it either, that look on your face says it all.”
Clove was still staring at the balls on the ground when she heard Holden's voice. Gritting her teeth as she looked up at him, she glared, shaking her head. Though, she could tell that he'd at least put a little bit more thought into this one, and he was trying to show her that he wanted to go with her, she still couldn't help but feel angry. "I told you that I was pissed off the first time because you made me feel like you thought I was easy, and your answer to that was a bunch of balls flying at my face? Did you really think I'd find that amusing?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. "What did you think, 'Oh, Clove loves to go balls deep, this will be great.'?" she asked, and then shook her head.
Holden knew from the glare that was practically looking through his face that he wasn’t going to win this time either. Yeah he thought this idea was funny on his part and very entertaining but he wasn’t sure how to win her over. They were friends that fucked and nothing more to it when feelings came involved, he couldn’t romantic things for her like dance around like an idiot or make a photo collage becasue that wasn’t him. He was starting to feel like every other dumb idea was getting so much more praise over his and he was just stuck. “This wasn’t me trying to amuse you, Clove!” He started to almost shouting at first but lowering his voice once he remembered the eyes that were all glued on them. “I was legit asking you to prom, in public just like every other girl in this damn school seems to like. I put effort into this crap,” he explained shaking his head as he kicked the balls around his foot. “I’ve practically got carpal tunnel,” he huffed, “Clove, this was seriously me trying,” he claimed, holding up the sign pleading his case.
Clove reeled back when she heard him speak, not expecting the volume that he'd projected. Biting at her bottom lip for a second, she frowned, shrugging a shoulder. "Well, I guess I'm sorry that I'm not like every other girl, Holden, but this..." She said, motioning around to the balls surrounding them, "It's-...I don't know, it's embarrassing. I'm sorry that you got carpel tunnel, honestly. I get it, okay? You're trying, you tried but-" She cut herself off, shaking her head, and closing her locker, "This isn't me, Holden. We may not have feelings for each other beyond being friends, but you're still supposed to know me, and you should know that this isn't me." Clove barely made eye contact with him, because she did feel bad, she could see that he'd put a lot of effort in, and she could maybe even see that he really might want to go with her, but she also couldn't get over feeling hurt, and embarrassed, and she couldn't get over all of the people staring at her like she was some kind of freak show as she stood surrounded by ping pong balls.
Holden sighed at her reaction and took in a deep breath to try and calm his mind. he knew he should have just went with the 4 leaf clover idea Noelle suggested but if that would have worked she would have been mad it wasn’t from him. “I don’t know what you want me to do,” he chimed in, dropping the poster to the ground. He didn’t know what to do anymore. If he was rich and had money he would just hire Sam Hunt to come in shirtless with Prom on his chest. But obviously made sure to put with Holden on him somewhere so she would know it was from him. Damn it he thought I should have used those tickets for this, that would have saved him all this trouble and both of them this embarrassment. Trying to make eye contact with her he let out a deep breath and tried to think. Personal. Some what thoughtful. He could do it, hopefully. “Just give me one more chance, no more gimmicks or embarrassing you,” he suggested, “I won’t even do it in public.”
Clove felt her frown growing deeper as he dropped the poster, she hated the look of defeat she'd caused. When he spoke again, she sighed, because she just didn't understand why he'd want to go through all of this just to go to prom with her. And she hated being difficult, she hated it so much, and always wondered she'd chase everyone off with how difficult she was, in fact, she'd half expected him to just say fuck it and ask someone else after the first failed attempt, she didn't know why he'd even want to attempt it a third time, but she nodded. "Okay." She whispered, finally making eye contact with him again, "But just some advice," She said, attempting to give him a smile, "Just something sweet, and simple. I don't need or want extravagant. If you really know me, and you really think about me, you should be fine."
Holden only was really attempting to do this again to get her to give in at this point but he knew it was not going to happen. She was turning him down once more and in front of even more people. If she felt embarrassment he felt it ten times more becasue he was going to hear about it later. Looking around at the eyes staring at them he could see the whispers and laughter coming past their lips as they pointed in their direction. hearing her not out up a fight and agree to one more shot got his attention and after glaring at the people that walked past he looked back at her. “Something sweet and simple, got it,” he agreed as he shot her a small innocent smile. Picking up the poster he folded it and stuck it under his arm so he could toss it away once he got away from everyone. I’m not cleaning up all this other shit though,” he tried joking to see if her mood was brought down even a little once the fighting had stopped. “Do you want me to help you get out of this so you don’t bust your ass and embarrass us even more?”
Clove followed Holden's eyes as he looked away and glared at people as they laughed. Her and Holden were both pretty high up on the social ladder, so no one would ever actually say anything to them, but she didn't appreciate the whispers, and she was sure he didn't either. Clove nodded, looking back at him when he spoke to her, letting out a small chuckle when he said he was cleaning up. "It's okay, I'm sure if I tip one of the janitors they'll take care of it." She joked back, and then looked around when he offered to help her out. Nodding, she reached a hand out to him, so he could help steady her, as she wasn't really interested in climbing over a mountain of ping pong balls, and with her luck, ending up with a broken nose just in time for prom.
Holden was just ready to get out of the hallway and get this day over with. He knew people assumed from the shit show at the beginning that she had turned him down but hopefully by the end of it with their small laughter people would stop whispering. “I guess I can always come back and clean it up, it should take me a while so I can get out of the only few classes that we do have today,” he nodded. reaching out for her hand he guided her thought the mess, trying to clear a path as they paced themselves but the balls just kept coming back. “Okay, now I see why this idea sucks, it’s literally a trap,” he puffed as he kicked them even harder, not caring who they hit. “I am sorry though,” he whispered, “ I’ll make it up to you, in more ways than one,” he whispered as they walked off from the crowd.
