He woke with a start, tears brimming in his sockets and threatening to trickle down his cheekbones from his lingering nightmare, an ominous hum of magic reverberating through the living room as his soul pulsed violently, chest heaving a bit, close to hyperventilation.
It didn’t help that there was an unfamiliar weight putting pressure against his sternum, pressing against his rib-cage and the festering wound over his ribs that refused to heal.
Cognitive thought kicked in before the worst however, unfocused eyelights glancing down to the green-skinned child curled up over his hoodie, blinking through the haze of blue-tinged tears and tire, before chuckling weakly.
Right.. he’d fallen asleep watching over the boy.
Closing his sockets to rub away the moisture, he played off the gesture with a feigned stretch, carefully sitting up to let Zax roll gently off onto the couch, reaching back to relieve a crick in his upper vertebrae, plastering on his typical lackadaisical facade to hide any persisting anxiety from his dream.
