you are honestly one of the sweetest and brightest people ive had the joy to speak to!! you are just so happy and full of joy and optimism always. you’re always so kind and try your best to make people happy, and you’re so fun to talk to!! i also love that you’re so open-minded, you love hearing everyones point of view, never make it into an argument or a debate, you just like to know and take things on board. talking to you is a lot of fun, and you’re always incredibly nice and supportive and you make me smile a lot. Im so glad we started talking!!

not to mention youre incredibly driven and hard working - you have a lot of aspirations and fully intend to fulfil all of your dreams. you doing what you do with so much joy and effort is really admirable, as well as the fact you’re so brave!! soon you’ll be in london (yay!) and you’ve been nothing but excited and positive about it.

Hi hi! This might sound kind of strange but I've seen a few posts on here about how wealthy Norwegians are (and particularly ppl in Oslo) and I was wondering if this is reflected in the skam characters? Do they come from wealthy homes and how are they relative to other ppl in Oslo? Thanks!!!

not sure if i can answer this properly, but i can try! some of this is just more of the same i answered in this ask a while back :) 

so basically, idk how to compare how rich we are compared to other countries.. like the state of norway is very rich, due to our oil fund. however, the average norweigan will be in debt for a significant part of their life, due to loans on houses/apartments/cars/cabins etc. another thing to consider is that we pay quite a lot of tax (not actually sure how this compares to other countries though), but that also means that we have free education all the way up to university level and that health care is reasonable. the cost of living is also quite high here. however, i am really not sure how “unusually rich” average norwegians are compared to for example other northern european countries. 

even though we are often talked about as a “socialist country”, the inequality is getting worse in our society. oslo is actually split into two parts in many ways, and there are differences between the two:  the east end and the west end. this wikipedia articleactually explains it quite well! short story: the east side of oslo was the working class part of the town, whereas the west side has always been the home for the upper classes. after immigration to norway “took off” most non-western immigrants have also typically lived in the east side neighbourhoods. this divide has existed for over 100 years at least and the differences are huge for norway (that is to say, small compared to a lot of other cities probably, but oslo west have some of the best living conditions in the country whereas oslo east have some of the worst.. but the difference between the best and the worst in norway is relatively small).

hartvig nissen school is definitely in the west side of oslo, and i see a lot of articles about skam that claim that the show is only about rich kids from the west side of oslo. but when we look at the schools they went to before nissen (which is decided by where they live, whereas nissen you apply with your grades from lower secondary), eva, isak, jonas, ingrid, sara, even, mahdi and magnus are all from schools in the parts of oslo that are considered east side/working class (not to say that those parts of oslo can’t be expensive..). while sana, chris, vilde, p-chris and william are from schools in the west side.

if we look at the actual apartments we are shown in the series, i would say that williams apartment is the most expensie one? and considering one of his parents owns it in addition to their other home in snarøya or london, they are definitely rich, like they would be considered rich in norway. sana’s family also have an apartment that seems kinda big, and it is located in frogner, which is quite an expensive neighbourhood. the rest its kinda hard to say, but it doesnt seem like anything of the ordinary to me? like i roll my eyes so hard when people have compared it to like gossip girl for new york e.g. nissen is a public school and you can go there no matter what part of oslo you live in and not all the skam characters seem particularly rich? most are middle class to upper middle class, probably exept for william’s family. 

i will say though… the most unrealistic thing is that kollektivet is only 4000 NOK a month per person. a flat share of that size would most likely be more like 6500 NOK per person or something. its so central and pretty nice and has a separate kitchen and decent sized bedrooms! that is a rarity.
