A Prayer for the President of the U.S.A.

adapted from Cardinal Dolan's prayer on the occasion of the inauguration of Donald Trump to the presidency.

We, blessed citizens of this one nation under God, humbled by our claim that "In God We Trust" [in Deo fidemus], gather to pray: God of our fathers, in Your wisdom You set man to govern Your creatures, to govern in holiness and justice, to render justice with integrity. Give our leader wisdom, for (he/she) is Your servant aware of (his/her) brevity of life. If wisdom, which comes from You, be not with (him/her), (he/she) will be held in no esteem. Send Wisdom from heaven, that She may be with (him/her), that (he/she) may know Your designs. Please, God, bless America; please mend her every flaw. You are the God in whom we trust, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

Wisdom praises herself,

and tells of her glory in the midst of her people.

In the assembly of the Most High she opens her mouth,

and in the presence of his hosts she tells of her glory:

I came forth from the mouth of the Most High,

and covered the earth like a mist.

I dwelt in the highest heavens,

and my throne was in a pillar of cloud.

Alone I compassed the vault of heaven

and traversed the depths of the abyss.

and over every people and nation I have held sway.

Wisdom was not a divine being, however, but is specifially said to have been created by God. She is similar to the "glory" of God described by the Priestly authors, representing the plan of God that human beings could glimpse in creation and in human affairs: the author [of the Book of Proverbs] represents Wisdom (Hakhmah) wandering through the streets, calling people to fear Yaweh. In the second century BCE, Jesus ben Sira, a devout Jew of Jerusalem, painted a similar portrait of Wisdom. He makes her stand up in the Divine Council and sing her own praises: she had come forth from the mouth of the Most High as the divine Word by which God had created the world; she is present everywhere in creation but has taken up permanent residence among the people of Israel.
