I was watching a video on ABC News of a toddler on a road with cars passing by in China's Zhejiang Province. After several cars, a police officer helped the child off the road. I felt indifferent to the situation, until I read the comment sections. It fuelled my anger. A commenter had said “It appears there is no culture of empathy, care or respect for others in this neighbourhood. Seems something is very broken in their society.” Other comments making extremely large generalisations like “The chinese leave their toddlers home alone while both parents go shopping and kids are found hanging out of windows and out alone at night etc. And unfortunately, some Chinese are doing it here” It triggered me so much. At first I was so angry that in my head I backlashed at the first comment thinking ‘Look at the homeless situation and how everyone passes by them everyday, how broken is our society?’ But I thought that was wrong, I shouldn’t be comparing a total different country to another, to justify my anger. Rationally, my comment makes no sense. You shouldn’t be comparing completely different situations and cultures. Through reflection, I realised before anything, always seek to understand. Why exactly did they not stop? What is their situation in life or cultural norms to not make those people not stop? What are the seemingly more pressing matters that our society has set up were happening at those moments? It’s these simple questions that are not only applicable to those in the Zhejiang Province but to the people Melbourne CBD who pass by the homeless everyday. Never cast judgement unless there is something that can be done about it. Do I have the willing action to do something about it, to not complain and actually solve the issue? What is the right thing to do? What vision of the world do we collectively want as individuals, societies and countries and how do we achieve it? Source: http://ab.co/2fyeUOh
