As promised, here’s a photo of some of my home-made tools.

The tool on the far right with the brass handle is a rake, used for evening out the surface of the sculpture after the general shapes and forms have been sculpted. I made it using a steel coping saw blade and brass tubing. If you're planning on trying to make one of these, I recommend carefully annealing the blade by heating it in a flame until it glows red, and then quenching it in water. This should make the saw blade easier to bend without snapping.

The other tool with the brass handle is really two sculpting tools in one; the pointed loop is truly excellent for doing hair and fur, and the other end (wire-wrapped guitar string) is good as a rake, especially for areas of a sculpt that are too small for the larger rake.

The two tools on the right with copper handles differ only in the size of the loops and gauges of the wire, but they’re pretty much identical, functionally speaking. These tools are fantastic for doing wrinkles and skin texturing. Like the brass-handled, double-tipped loop tool, the copper tools both have wire-wrapped guitar string and are useful for evening out the clay’s surface.

I have an embarrassingly huge collection of sculpting tools (most store-bought) and out of all the tools, I’d wager that I use these the most, and those teeny copper loop tools have been my favorites since I made them.

I recommend that any of you sculptors or aspiring sculptors out there try your hand at making some tools for yourselves. It’s fun, inexpensive, and with some experimentation, you’ll be able to make some custom tools that are a great fit for the work you create.
