Around 5 is when they lined up the girls with felony offenses. Girls who said they didn't know why they were in here. I learned the girl with skeletal features was only 25. I thought she was 40. I didn't realize I was bunking with felons. Then they lined up the girls with misdemeanors. I was in line with one girl who was taken in for stealing a Michael Kors bag and the couple. As we were walking in a line, reminiscent of days in elementary school, an officer looked at me with a half smile, "I heard you maced somebody". Like it was some kind of joke. Then one of the girls said, "yo, I don't care what no body says. She's a G!" I can't believe this is happening. Then. I spoke with my lawyer, given to me by the state. She was pissed I was in this situation, "So you asked the officers to arrest him and they didn't?!" "So he's attacked you before?!" "The apartment is only under YOUR name?!" I thought justice would be served right then and there. I was wrong. The judge ordered a temporary order of protection to last 6 months. I wasn't allowed to go back home. All I had were the clothes on my back, keys, my ID, and a receipt to pick up my pepper spray from holding. I was homeless. Defeated. And alone.

It wasn't easy that night, that very first night. The day had come to an end and all the people with whom I'd chatted blithely all day were leaving. They had homes to go to, meals to prepare, chores to attend to, lives to live. They had showers to take and beds to lay down on, blankets to cover themselves with, normal, routine, mundane events that kept them in their own stabilities. As they walked away, got into their cars, disappeared into the distance, my world became increasingly more silent and alone.
