In Honor of Honest Ed’s
One of Toronto’s great and beloved characters, “Honest Ed” Mirvish and his store dominated the Bathurst and Bloor intersection for decades. Along with his many publicity stunts, like riding an elephant, he also did things such as give away 10,000 turkeys at Christmas. He died in 2007 and the store continued until 2015. Many a poor student, new immigrant or low-income actor or artist found themselves regaled with mounds of discontinued items advertised with hand-made price signs (which are now collector’s items). He was a lover of puns and the Theater and worth reading about on Wikipedia. Note: the top image by TEAMSPUD shows Ed in top-hat on his way to opening night.
