poc in fandoms, stir the pot Em >:)

POC in the fandom aren’t treated very well (here and in other fandoms). I’ve watched people grow to love Mike, and there ARE 100% def people who have loved him from the start, but the Mike love and Mike ships didn’t really start until people started to call out about it. And Mike’s character was super erased in the movie. Like. Super. He is genuinely the most important person in the book. You can’t change my mind on that. He is the REASON the losers come back to Derry. And a lot of the time he is reduced to nothing but sports (he was a footballer in the book so sometimes its valid) and soft uwu boy. Let mike have multi dimensions 2019

I want everyone to know I’m guilty of this, too. I don’t often write Mike and I overlook him on a subconscious level more than I want to. Part of being a white person in this world is understanding our level of racial priv and ACTIVELY WORKING against it. I make efforts to explore Mike, support his ships, and read content on him. I make intentional efforts to support POC creators on this site. I’m not perfect. I’m part of the problem. But I am working to be part of the solution. I am thankful to have a creator like Moe here to nudge conversation, educate, and bring awareness about racial issues in fandom to light. I value her as a creator, as a PERSON, and especially as a woman of color.

K. Flay - Wishing It Was You

Mike held the bottle of whiskey, grimacing at the taste, but forcing it down anyways. He stared across the room, catching sight of his ex-boyfriend.

Stan Uris.

It wasn’t his fault they broke up. Not by a long shot. Stan made the call, because Stan thought they needed this time to explore their options.

Of course… Maybe a little bit of the blame did lie on Mike. He was a sip away from reflecting on all the mistakes he thought he made as a boyfriend. He forgot to pay the internet bill consistently, but at least he was consistent. The laundry was folded but never put away. Cleaning day was more of a cleaning week, since Mike liked to tackle it one room at a time. Little things that could turn into big things when you’ve been with someone long enough.

Foolish things.

Mike wiped his mouth two sips later, biting his lip and shaking his head. He knew what he wanted. Straightening up, smoothing out his shirt and rolling his shoulders, he thought to himself: You got this, Mikey.

“I want you back, Stan. We shouldn’t have broken up. I should’ve fought for you. I want you back, Stanley Uris,” he repeated to himself. When Stan turned to face him, however, all the words caught in his throat.

“Can I help you?” he asked, and Mike didn’t miss the nervous hesitation.

“You can,” he replied. It would’ve helped if he said more, but the two stood with nothing but the music and chatter filling the awkwardness between them. “I mean to say, you can help with uh…” He scratched the back of his head, looking at the people dancing in the living room. Stan used to say he was bored at these house parties.

“Mike?”

“How about you help me with a broken heart?”

The awkward non-silence filled their ears again.Then they were both cackling.

“Mikey, baby, that was awful,” Stan chuckled, shaking his head.“So now I’m baby?” Mike stepped closer to Stan, his mouth curling up into a small smile when Stan also inched towards him.“You’re a baby-”“I’m your baby-”“Mike Hanlon.”“I can make you say that louder, if you want,” he offered, his lips brushing the skin below Stan’s earlobe. He shivered beneath Mike’s touch, before pulling away. Of course, Mike pulled him back. “I still love you.”

Stan froze, and Mike waited for him to respond. While Stan didn’t say anything, he did press his forehead against Mike’s, a longing look in his eyes.

That was answer enough.

But, that was also 3 years ago. I think I should be a little open-minded about it, so maybe I’ll go this year. The only problem is...I don’t have a date yet. - Stan.

I’m not entirely sure where this ship came from, but it seems sweet! They’re two very kind, caring characters; very compatible, and they both certainly need the stability in their lives. They both remember IT more than any of the other Losers throughout their adulthood.

But they aren’t chaotic enough for my tastes, if I’m honest. The most consistent theme in my ships is that everything is a fucking mess and everything hurts. Which is like... not what either of them deserves at all, lmfao.

When I first joined this fandom I was so intimidated by you bc your writing is phenomenal and I admire you so much as a writer n a human being. I'm so glad I've gotten to know you and I love seeing you on my dash and on discord! You're such a wonderful, beautiful person I literally can't believe we're friends I'm like :'0 wow You're fucking hysterical and talking to you is a damn delight I hope you know that.
