The phrase mercurial musical figures implies a certain volatility that gives us the majestic works we listen to and enjoy. However, I don't think Ryuichi Sakamoto – he could also be one of the type – fits the alleged personality profile. He seems like your usual professor who has a lecture. The latter appears to be quite erudite and incredibly calm, until he suddenly does a collection of strange breakdance moves, which he accompanies with a sample of his throat singing. Eventually, he returns back to normal as if the previous event didn't happen. Yes, Sakamoto is more low-key than all the cliches we associate these mercurial musical figures with, though each of them has his or her own personality to achieve his or her goals.
