Episode 12 – Alison Earnhart’s School of Honk!TX
Self described as the real-life love child of Miss Frizzle & Buckaroo Banzai, Alison Earnhart is quite the character. Serving as member of Honk!TX, an annual New Orleans style brass band music fest in Austin, TX, she has helped in bringing a whole new level of excitement in the live music capital of the world. When she’s not jamming out in one of the many brass bands she’s in, you can find her at…

Best Places to Eat During HONK!TX
HONK!TX, a marching band music festival is coming to town this weekend! Last year Austin Food Trailers followed HONK!TX and had a really great time! The musicians are exceedingly talented and extremely fun and engaging! Dancing and singing in the streets was a great way to shake off the winter gloom and reenergize for the spring bloom! As it’s a traveling festival I thought it would be helpful to give the visiting bands and any HONK!TX attendees a few pointers on where to grab some food, and in the spirit of the troubadours - some travel friendly food from food trailers!
What is HONK!TX?
HONK!TX is a magical, musical festival, and the HONK!TX website has all of the details:
“HONK!TX is a nonprofit, community-driven festival that brings brass bands from around the country to perform absolutely free in the public spaces of Austin, TX. Performing an array of genres ranging from European Klezmer and Balkan, to New Orleans second-line brass music, spectacular bands will come from far and wide this year to transform everyday locations around Austin into organic stages, where the line between crowd and performers dissolves and music, mirth and mayhem are born. Harking back to a time when festivities and entertainment were not something created for the enjoyment of a passive audience, but rather an experience created through the participation of each and every person involved, HONK!TX is more than just a music festival; it is a celebration of community, collaboration, individuality, and creative expression. Come HONK! with us!!!"
And HONK we will!
HONK!TX Kickoff Food Trailers
Lucky for everyone involved, HONK!TX is starting off on South Congress, which is still the home to some of Austin’s best food trailers.
Burro Cheese Kitchen - Excellent artisanal grilled cheese! Need I say more? I strongly recommend the Waylon & Willie or a Croque-Madame.
Ms. P’s Electric Cock - OMG, life changing fried chicken that will give you the energy to dance and play the night away! Chicken Energy!
Hey!... You Gonna Eat or What? - This is one of Austin’s most beloved trailers, they’re at the top of numerous “Best of” lists and they’ve got the food to back up their reputation!
PitaLicious - They have delicious vegan and vegetarian menu items!
Hey Cupcake! - Got a sweet tooth? Well, they’ve got sweet treats!
Adams Park/Hemphill Park Neighborhood Food Trailers
Day two takes everyone over to the Campus area and to a beautiful park! Now… where to eat??
Right by the Park
Love Balls - In the delicious tradition of Japanese Street Food - love balls will feed your belly and imagination!
A Little Ways Down the Road
East Side Kings - A little ways down Guadalupe, tucked behind Hole in the Wall bar (you have to walk through) you’ll come across an inventive menu full of flavors and fragrances you’ve never experienced before. Seriously, it’s magical!
Coop Food Court - Just a little further down the same road you’ll find a whole oasis of delicious food trailers. You will be greeted by a magical auburn beast who will welcome you to dine with the locals! And what a feast you will have! Full House BBQ, Delicious Thai, Southside Flying Pizza, Lard Have Mercy, Bufalo Bob’s Chalupa Wagon, and Pueblo Viejo will fill your hungry bellies!
HONK!TX subsists entirely on donations and there are lots of ways you can help out!
"Volunteering comes in several varieties, each with its own perks and responsibilities. Plus, HONK!TX is FREE to the public and will be taking place in the streets of Austin. That means, among other things, that you can enjoy the festival while still volunteering!”
Learn about what you can do to support HONK!TX by visiting their website!
