There was a chain around his throat. Iron and heavy and so close to being real he found himself at times rubbing his neck to get a feel of it. Shingen and Kenshin both holding leads that tightened to choke. “His” war with the dragon king’s forces what united them during a lull in their feud. A small mercy it was that outside of directing the flow of battle neither lord wanted anything to do with him and instead did so through their junior warlords. A small mercy, but the only one.
“They wanna use go-betweens that much? I’ll go.”
He brushed Hori’s indignation away with a signed, “It’s fine.” Hori scowled, but didn’t press the matter. His greatest breakthrough had been sometime after taking over Pugilis, when he’d found no trouble in reaching his voice. Nowadays he rarely talked and excused it with exhaustion. The last he could remember having such trouble speaking was when he was a child too small to work.
Meetings were held in the areas of camp used by either Illusio or Terrera soldiers. He arrived early for the one with Kenshin’s junior. Folding his legs on the ground, he waited.
‘ That's good, dear. ’ She would expect nothing less of Kanetsugu. He was next to her Lord Kenshin to uphold mental strength as his top priority.
‘ I would expect nothing less of you. I just get concerned considering your recent responsibilities.’ Drop the weight of a whole kingdom on someone who was technically still apprenticing-! Stress, anxiety, and even the threat of migraines or headaches was detrimental to mental health. The mind of a psychic was their greatest weapon.
‘ Remember to take at least take ten minute breaks every four hours with meditation. I’m sure you can handle business, but is anything or anyone else bothering you? Because if something is-’ In which her mental verbatim turns angry all of a sudden.
‘ -I’ll gladly take care of the problem. ’

He cannot help the flinch that jerks his shoulders. The sound of approach fills him with terror and dread he did not think himself capable of away from battle. (Though surely this is another form of it? A form Lord Shingen never prepared him for?) His thoughts, when he can gather them, cling more and more to the memory of his liege. As though to take strength from the image of his mentor.
What if they make me forget him?
Fear douses him cold as the waters of the Nixtorm coast. What if, worse, they corrupt his memories? Twist them upon themselves until he believes Shingen his tormenter more than the ones doing the actual torture.
He clings to the memory so as not to forget, but there is relief when his thoughts are scattered by pain and invasion and assault more intimate than anything his body could endure so long as Lord Shingen---even the memory of him---stays safe.
The sounds come nearer, and Yukimura grits his teeth. Takes a breath and steels his mind after dispersing the thought of Lord Shingen once more. So Illusio finally got their hands on him? So what? He was junior warlord of Terrera. He was Lord Shingen’s trusted right hand. Let them do whatever perversions to his mind they could dream of.
Yukimura will not be beaten.
