On a recent trip to New York I went to visit the team at the Consulate of Mexico there to learn more about their work across cultural, economic and consular relations. It was fantastic to get an understanding of all of the projects that they are involved in, to hear also about the ways in which they resolve and address different consular issues, and get a new perspective on the relationship between the USA and Mexico, which is so important in the context of all international relations and opportunities. Learning as much as I can about the different economies, social challenges and cultures that exist within Mexico is an extremely important part of developing my understanding of the ways in which I can best support people. It was great to make my first visit to the southernmost state of Mexico, Chiapas, and to visit its capital, San Cristobal de las Casas, at the time the city is celebrating its 490th Anniversary. While in Chiapas I travelled around much of the state and to the borders with Guatemala got to know local and international artists that have made a home for themselves in the state. I visited some local education projects to understand the different needs and ways of operation here and am pleased to say have kept in touch with many of the people from this trip, who continue to provide me with perspectives on the issues that matter most to them.
