Can you tell me a bit about Japanese honorifics? For example, if Sesshoumaru had to address someone of similar or higher rank relative to him, what would be the honorific that he would use?

He’s never spoken to or of someone who outranks him or used an honorific on anyone, so it’s hard to say.  He just calls his father “chichi-ue”, which is a formal way of addressing one’s father but doesn’t contain an honorific.  He actually never addressed his mother as anything (Jaken called her “Gobodou-sama”, a humble way of addressing a superior’s mother), though one would assume he’d use “haha-ue”.

Honorifics are all about being polite and recognizing another’s worth, something that Sesshoumaru most certainly is not in the habit of doing.  I have a previous post about what honorific everyone uses on everyone else.

"Oppa" and How Stupid Some Fans Can Be

I have one ultimate bias and one ideal. I have an "oppa" and an "ahjussi". Why? Well, Daesung is my ultimate bias because he emits this amazing, unrelenting feeling of happiness and everything I have come to know about him makes me feel that he is the epitome of what a role model and idol should be. THEREFORE, he is "Oppa". Do I refer to him as this all the time? Ever? No, but in my head, he's the only idol I would ever call that. And Seungho, being all that he is, is the epitome of my "dream man", and if you follow me you know that. Seungho, despite that wonderfulness, is simply not my ultimate bias, and so I gave him a different title, "Ahjussi"... well, for several reasons, but for now all you need to know is that its because "Oppa" is usually reserved for a certain type of person- an actual brother or someone you have an interest in (or an older guy you want to do something for you, hahaha). Calling Seungho "ahjussi" just fits better, too... since, after all, it was after basing my interest in Seungho off my love of Dae did I really begin to admire him. I'm not one of those people with a single individual they say is God's greatest gift to (wo)mankind and whatnot. I'm not one of those fans that call everyone Oppa and whatever, and I'm certainly not one of those fans that make fun of the term or use it in a stupid ass sense where everything is "oppar" this and "oppar" that. I think I've actually SAID oppa all of six times in my entire life, and all six times were during SMTown. Seriously. I was thinking about that KPS post and seriously, using respectful terms like "Oppa" and stuff in such ignorant ways really reflects badly on international fans. Like, if you're going to use the damn word as if you actually speak the language, at least use it correctly, or bother to learn WHY its used... Even then, it's not like every girl calls every guy Oppa. It's reserved for certain uses and then omitted when unnecessary. It just annoys me to no end when I see stupid fans making fun of ignorant fans for saying Oppa when they are no better themselves, and pretend that they have a grasp on the language. When someone writes about "Xxxxx Oppa" and you write "0mG 0ppA iz da bestest" to make fun, YOU look like the dumb ass. Please take five seconds to actually google the word and stop making people with a real interest in language and CULTURE look bad. The end.
