April Black is a software programmer and simmer who has been working this deep dive video for over a year. It's hella long but a VERY thorough and interesting discussion on how the Sims 2 handles deleting character files and why other odd behaviors emerge. I highly recommend the watch if you are interested in this sort of thing or ever worry about the corruption of your hoods. I handed over my hood for her to poke at since it was so old and had a few instances of disappearing sims.
So after doing some testing, I figured out the problem with my TS2 wasn't my CC at all.
Wildwood got a spot of the ol' hood corruption. And once I figured that out- and figured out that I did have some very old backups indeed- I was able to use Alt Sim Surgery to get 90% of the sims in the hood backed up.
The bad news: I've still got to rebuild the whole town, and not every sim made it.
The good news: Yovia, Buff Drinklots, Primevere Forester, and 90% of the rest of the kids you know and love are safe.
The even better news: you still have a solid year and a half of gameplay photos before this becomes relevant.
Anyone know how to fix sims 2 memory leaks?
Finally come to the conclusion that this is what’s been making my game crash, flashing blue textures indicative of insufficient ram etc. Every time i run sims 2 task manager shows a disk usage of 100% even if it’s only just been opened - anyone have any tips on how to fix this?
Also, possible hood corruption. Stretched thought bubbles can be a sign of this, right? I have a suspicion my saves got borked when i moved stuff over to my new computer a few months back so i’m considering starting over with a fresh install and clean mods/cc etc. Thoughts?

WHYYYY?
I have moved their tombstones to the inventory of the cemetry owner (by selecting him), then placed them in the cemetry manually. I also have the nounlinkedead mod. Why does this still happen?
Me, as I sit and watch my neighbourhood get more and more corrupted:
