The 2015 Hood to Coast Relay was going smooth until they reached Seaside Oregon where they were met with 70+ MPH winds. Race organizers had already set up the concert stage, finish line, and beer garden and didn’t anticipate the strength and power of the wind gusts. The storm started rolling in at 5am and by 7am the beach was closed near the Seaside Turnaround and the finish line setup and tents were all destroyed. The race went on as scheduled but instead finished on Broadway. Overall the racers seemed like they had a great time and were not affected by the Hood to Coast Hurricane. In all my years of living on the Oregon Coast I have never seen a storm like this in the summer, especially not in the month of August. Rumor has it that event organizers suffered more than $150,000 in storm damage to sound equipment alone not counting the food, tents, and lost revenue from beer and wine sales. Overall the reaction on the beach in Seaside was positive and the racers appeared to be enjoying themselves. The 34th annual HTC had a ruff finish but you can expect participants to be back next year ready for another race.
