Hoogahs and Kite Serpents
Name: Hoogah; Kite Serpent
Description: Dragon-like creatures, with Kite Serpents possessing elaborate frills used for flight.
Hoogahs were created by @tyrantisterror as a young child. As detailed in this post, the Hoogah were created as the good counterpart to dragons, as at the time a young TT only ever saw dragons portrayed as evil creatures. Hoogahs are, in most respects, identical to dragons, but are good instead of evil.
They also breathed bubble gum instead of fire.
Kite Serpents were created when the Hoogahs were brought back as the hypothetical ancestors to Tolkien’s dragons, as the canon is rather vague on their origins.
In this version Hoogahs are a race of ancient reptiles, ones which specialized in devouring the giant spiders of Middle Earth. As the spiders grew more monstrous their predators grew in turn, gaining the ability to turn their prey to stone.
Kite Serpents evolved vast frills which they used to glide on air currents.
Many Hoogahs were kidnapped by Morgath and tortured, being transformed into the Dragons of Middle Earth.
Sauron, attempting to replicate this, would create the fell-beasts from Hoogahs.
For TT’s own fantasy based world, the potential lore of the Hoogahs is different.
I did an analysis, seen here, that hypothesizes that Hoogahs are a sister clade to dragons, sharing a common ancestor. While Dragons specialize in all four types of magic, Hoogahs specialize in Fire/Destruction and Earth/Structure magic while Kite Serpents add Wind/Freedom magic into the mix.
While Dragons have Philosopher Kings, and prize wit and cunning, Hoogahs have Grand Altruists, and prize altruism and beneficial deeds.
As inspired by Dragonheart, and the original intentions of Hoogahs, Hoogahs are able to transform themselves into stone for camouflage purposes.
A proposed way of keeping their gummy breath is to give them venom which solidifies into a sweet, pink or light red webbing.
