So I watched Hook's backstory in Season 5 Episode 11 I think? Swan Song... and I didn't like it.
Genuinely did not like it. The whole thing about his dad and he had to make a choice to save his dad or kill his dad to see what if he could let go of his resentment, anger, and need for revenge and be a what? Good person?
Hook isn't justified in being angry at his dad.
At not caring about his dad.
At choosing himself?
Yeah, he made his little brother an orphan. That's the worst thing but the way this episode paints his father as sympathetic when the man sold his two sons to slavery.
There was literally a vote within OUAT reddit page of whose the worst parent and want to know who won? Peter Pan.
Now I'm not defending Pan. He's horrible but...
How is Malcolm abandoning Rumple worse than Brennan selling his sons to slavery to get himself a boat to save himself from being captured by soldiers?
And I wouldn't blame fans for thinking Peter Pan is the absolute worst because we spent half a season seeing how awful he is.
In one episode, we see Killian's father and the show frames him as sympathetic as a man who made a mistake. As is that's what selling your children to servitude is... a mistake?
A mistake is Idk trusting the wrong person to watch your children not recognizing the person is an asshole. Like hiring an abusive tutor or babysitter.
A mistake is giving your kid the wrong present, forgetting their birthday now and then, or I don't know, saying something that embarrased them without realizing it.
Selling your kids to servitude is not a mistake. That's a deliberate move on your part to save yourself.
The portrayal of Hook's father and how much of the episode is down to Hook doing the right thing, of letting go of his anger, resentment and pain. To an extent, it's fitting to the symbol of Captain Hook representing the worst of adulthood. We become the worst of ourselves when we hold onto the negative trauma that has impacted out life. I'll admit this part of Hook's story and development is not bad.
But I also feel angry for Hook in this episode and how much is down to him to let go of so much that he has a right to feel. It feels almost toxic to me, to spread this whole message of toxic forgiveness?
Hook doesn't owe his father anything. He doesn't have to be kind.
And most of all, Hook is justified in his revenge against Rumpelstiltskin. To frame that as the wrong... is what angers me. Was Milah not a great person? Yeah, she wasn't. She was a coward for abandoning her son and not confronting Rumple. She was abusive to Rumple.
That doesn't mean her death is justified, and sometimes I feel the fandom feels it is just because she's an unlikable woman who was awful to Rumpelstiltskin. Hook has every right to want revenge against Rumplestiltskin. This isn't equal to Regina at all.
What I don't understand though is why he would want to kill all of Emma's loved ones just because she saved him? I'm skipping ahead so yeah... I'm not sure why Captain Swan is popular tbh... They seem awful based on this episode.
Honestly, ended up being more of a Hooker Queen fan with this episode. Regina and Hook's dynamic was the BEST part of the episode in my opinion, and it was Regina who was able to reach out to Hook and ask him the important question:
"What kind of man do you want to be?"
This isn't blind love. Regina contributed to Hook's development here by forcing him to face his demons and think is this what you want. She didn't say this isn't you, though at first she did, as did Emma. She let Hook think.
And Hook finally made the right choice even though Regina played a part in him enacting an act he clearly felt a great deal of guilt from.
To a certain extent, they did bring some depth to Killian I guess, especially playing onto Peter Pan themes of growing up in order to help Killian shed his Captain Hook persona.
But at the same time, I don't know...
I'm still disappointed at how un-Captain Hook he is.
And his backstory with his dad was disappointing.
“You and I both know I’m his type”: or unless you are Emma Swan, Killian Jones will be pretty unimpressed .
