Go Dawgs! Beat the Aggies! Get ‘em back for 1950!
Likely the long-time #UGAFootball #GADawgs fan doesn’t really enjoy remembering the December 1950 Presidential Cup Game...
when we played Texas A&M in College Park, Maryland, but, as archivists, we are here to provide actual historical references, no matter how unpleasant they may be.
On the bench and #InTheLoupe today are frames from the 16mm silent Kodachrome film of that game, shot by cameraman Ken Stambaugh. (We love the Kodachrome boxes surrounding the program. Clever!) He also lensed this film about Thomasville, Georgia, by itinerant (mostly Florida) filmmaker, Don Parisher. Stambaugh appears to have come from a family that owned (or all worked for) a film company, though we are still looking into that. Anyone with Stambaugh info, especially a photo, let us know.
Georgia’s own Senator Richard Russell is at the game. Likely he was still on Capitol Hill in December, so getting over to College Park for the game was no big deal.
On the field were many military bands--
The stands weren’t jam packed, but there’s definitely a good crowd.
At halftime, the Queen’s court congregated at center field--
The temperature at the game ran at about 39 degrees Fahrenheit, but this is the first time I’ve seen cheerleaders cheering in coats and hats!
Alas, the #Aggies had a very early lead and never lost it, so the final result is not what we’d wanted:
But this weekend is our chance to make up for it!! #GODAWGS!
The Red & Black of December 1, 1950 gives us some more info on the matchup and the festivities:
Even when I feel like death I’m still in my gear rooting (aka clapping REALLY loud since my voice and throat are shot) and watching the game 🤘🏻🤘🏻.. excuse the dirty table.
