Ellis loves the club. Not the people in it, not what it represents, but the club itself. Other guys younger than him name their cars, their weapons, he never got that, no, the club is his baby. She pulses under his fingertips, creaks when they’ve hit mass, and - as cliche as it sounds - acts like a home for the lost.

She also ages.

He remembers when he and Michaud first bought the place. The metal shined when the lights were on, the wood on the bar’s surface was smooth, and everything just smelled new and innocent.

But time goes on. Jizz and vomit and sweat and booze and tears and people moving away have left all the marks you’d expect on the place. Benzaie leaves, the toilets overflood. Mary gets pregnant, runs away with Joe, the corners gather dust. Critic overdoses, the scuffs and scratches on the bar can’t be hidden anymore.

They hurt, she hurts with them. And he’s grateful for the company.
