elm trees my only friend
every tree grabbed my ass and beat me senseless. so much so that my allergist scribbled more trees! and yet the lovely elm cradled and comforted me
in case folk outside the UK aren't abreast of our news, the British press just hounded a black academic to death
a rough timeline of events (from memory, there may be inaccuracies, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
Cambridge professor of sociology Jason Arday is accused of plagiarism by another academic
the accuser is a "race realist" who believes that in a true meritocracy all university professors would be white. this is somehow not acknowledged much during the entire ordeal
this leads to several days of media coverage demanding an investigation, or that Arday is expelled from his post immediately
somehow this accusation that has no effect on the lives of 99.99% of the population becomes FRONT PAGE NEWS in all the newspapers for multiple days, above anything else happening in the UK or the world at large
following intense media scrutiny, Arday resigns his post as a Cambridge professor
today, august 14th, days after resigning, Arday is found dead at his home in Battersea
the British tabloid press remains, and will always be, fucking evil
had to share this
In every way this is set up to be a joke like any other short video, it even uses the trope of main character in a wig to represent their mom, but it isn't funny at all. It's just sweet and nice
"he's like a woman to me" is he or are you just a misogynist and unwilling to engage with female characters?
OCD recovery is cosmically unfair because it's the only disorder i know of where the treatment is 'okay! now make yourself feel worse'
depression recovery: go for a walk. eat some nice food. meet with a friend. be kind to yourself.
OCD recovery: okay, so it's very important to accept that we cannot definitively rule out that you are mega-hitler, and you may have caused 9/11
not to make a vent post here but like id understand if it was halo top or friendlys but if im bringing you hagen daaz or ben and jerrys and you still complain about how my basement isnt ventilated well or your chain is too tight then you just sound ungrateful. sorry
remember when rtd wrote in lines about christopher eccleston’s body with the knowledge he was suffering from an eating disorder and continued to hire john barrowman despite the fact that he was sexually harassing his coworkers. remember when rtd has eccleston blacklisted from the bbc.
remember when rtd had davidtennant3 regenerate into a suit despite the fact that that wasn’t what thirteen was wearing? because she was a woman? and remember when he wrote a trans character only to have her relate to some bioessentialist femininity that the doctor couldn’t relate to because he’s a man? remember how rtd treated adoption? remember how the first black doctor was sidelined in TWO episodes of his first season? remember how belinda chandra was locked in a box for an entire episode and then lobotomized? remember how ruby sunday sympathized with the fascist? remember how he created an entire regeneration concept just so a white actor could overshadow a person of color? remember how racist, sexist, and transphobic that man is?
REMEMBER when there were rumors of millie gibson being so unpleasant to work with that she was fired from doctor who and no member of rtds team or the bbc put in any effort to defend her while her reputation was being ruined?
remember when he sandwiched the first black, queer doctor’s era between david tennant and billie piper?
remember fucking martha jones. remember mickey smith
I will NEVER get over this photoshoot!! 🥵🥵😍😍
did you have to use that photo for that
i mean good on them...? still paired with that image thats uh. interesting
they're making dangerous fuckbots
"its still racist even if you act like youre joking"- something a shockingly few amount of people understand
A 2026 study found that when women and men use AI tools to create identical resumes, evaluators view the women as less competent, while cred
In the new study, Chatoo created an AI-supported resume for a marketing position and asked 1,000 adults in the U.K. to evaluate the candidate during April 2026. The evaluators received identical resumes and were told that the candidate had used AI assistance. The only difference among the resumes was the candidate’s name. Half of the evaluators saw Emily Clarke, while half saw James Clark. Despite identical resume content, the evaluators judged women candidates much more harshly for using AI assistance than men. The evaluators who attributed the AI-assisted resume to a woman were twice as likely to question the candidate’s competency. “She can’t even write a CV herself—not sure she has the skill to carry out the job,” said one of the evaluators of Emily’s resume. [...] The study also found that an evaluator’s own familiarity with AI tools did not eliminate gender bias when assessing others’ AI use. Older evaluators showed less gender bias than male Gen Z evaluators, who are more likely to use AI themselves. Among Gen Z males, 97% rated James as a “strong” candidate while only 76% rated Emily as “strong,” representing a 21 percentage point gender gap.
Men hoarding all the AI
oh this is a fun angle. I guess the silver lining is that AI resume evaluators can be trained and tested to minimize this bias, and within five years no human will ever read a resume again in any event
a human cannot be made unbiased, therefore a human must never make a hiring decision
Lawyer who is like visibly trying not to cry and teary-eyed and snifflign and drawing shaky breaths and hands trembling and constantly wiping his nose on his sleeves but he’s winning the case
TW fucked up hands!
Full disclosure I’m assisted with AI for that shove into uncanny valley (I do most of it myself I swear) and AI trying to do normal hands sucks. AI told to do body horror on the other hand?
the more i rewatch twin peaks i am reminded more and more that albert rosenfield (and to a lesser extent bobby briggs, though he doesn’t quite articulate it as clearly as albert with the exception of him breaking down at laura’s funeral) is THE only character to recognize laura’s death for what it was—completely avoidable, unromantic, and caused by human evil that nobody recognized the signs of or did anything to stop
and then in the return bobby briggs becomes a cop. in some (ultimately ineffective) attempt to escape everything he and his peers went through. and his own daughter starts following laura’s path. and he still can’t stop the cycle of violence that has soaked into the soil of twin peaks
bobby sees the immobility of the town and tries to call it out, but he is also a deeply emotional struggling seventeen year old with many issues whom we watch process his trauma day by day—which i think is actually incredibly well written and makes sense for his character and relationship to the town and to laura. but bobby is treated as the odd one out, a suspect, as being wrong for reacting emotionally the way he does. and even the 'good' characters who try to help him are not immune from perpetuating the violence that has seeped into the town. bobby is a struggling kid, also in desperate need of help, and the people around him react by continuing to other him for breaking the dreamlike facade of twin peaks as a place of safety. in the second episode of the series, bobby lights a cigarette and refuses to engage with his parents in conversation about laura's death. in response, garland briggs strikes him across the face.
meanwhile i think about the fact that one of the first major moments interpersonal conflicts set up for albert is that he wants to do the autopsy on laura and finds himself fighting with half the town—including other law enforcement officers—to just do his job and try to bring this dead child justice. it is so incredible to me how key his character is in understanding how and why the show is the way it is, and then watching fire walk with me completely tempers the way you view the show; why didn’t anyone help laura when she was alive? and why is albert the only adult to do so after her death?
in some way i have failed every single social interaction i have ever had
