'Hooligan' pumpkins are hanging in the garden. Why would a gardener want to encourage pumpkin plants to climb up sticks, strings, chain link fences and chicken wire cages? Other than the obvious benefits of hiding ugly materials and structures with leaves, the answer lies in size; both the size of the garden and size of the pumpkins. If pumpkins are small enough to hold in a hand (little ornamental gourds, Jack-be-little, Hooligan) or obviously meant to dangle (loofa, snake gourds) they will thrive when climbing, and they do it well. If pumpkins weigh several pounds, they cannot hold their weight from their stems, so should grow along the ground and spread horizontally where their vines can root along nodes as they grow. Small gardens will be covered with very few pumpkin plants, so growing the small pumpkin varieties up supports leaves space to grow other crops and allows some air to circulate through the leaves.
