With another flick of her wrist, Carina smiled as the tiny ball sailed into the goal. Foosball had never interested her on Earth, maybe having played a single game at a bar years ago, but it was one of the only games she could stand to play against someone while on the Argo. She had tired of card games, all except for poker and the occasional game of War. A game of foosball, however, never seemed to get old. She smiled as she flicked over another points marker, the score tied between the two.
Looking up at Ray, she wondered if she should say something. The two had played in relative silence for 20 minutes now, which never bothered Carina. The few words exchanged were curse words muttered under their breath, which is often how her games played out. She wasn’t a talker, but she had learned over the years that talking with Ray wasn’t a bad thing. He was easy to be around, easy to open up to. And maybe they both needed to talk tonight.
As the ball dropped into the middle of the field once more, she spun one of the handles violently before speaking. “How was your day?” she asked, hoping he knew what she was really asking. Carina couldn’t help but be thankful that Ray had agreed to stay behind after dinner. There was something comforting about his presence, since she knew he was the one person on the ship that understood exactly what was going through her mind right now. Thankfully, the only thing they would fight about was her less-than-honest means of scoring goals.
