If you don’t mind me asking, have you heard about any harmful and bad stereotypes about kazakhs?
I don't mind, but Kazakhs should be capitalized! I feel like the average person doesn't know much about Kazakhstan to be honest 😭 I've heard Kazakhs talk about mistakenly identified as being Chinese or people assuming Kazakhstan is a West Asian country because of the -stan suffix, so there is an aspect of identity erasure. But if people are aware, most of these stereotypes they know probably stem from Borat (a banned mockumentary "dark comedy" film). Sometimes people mistakenly assume the entirety of Kazakhstan is a nomadic, undeveloped society and everyone rides horses and lives in yurts. This goes hand in hand with the assumption that the country is dangerous (which I think stems from Islamaphobia because a lot of people assume Kazakhstan is an Islamic country. Islam is the predominant religion but the country is secular). The more I think about it, I feel like people view Kazakhstan similarly to how they view the Middle East generally and apply the same sentiments, if they are aware of the country at all.
