So I've been considering blogging for a while now but have never been much of a writer. Always got a lot to say but for some reason could never put it all together. Well with MacT coming out talking about the possibility of trading Horcoff and Hemsky, I think I finally have enough to say so I'm gonna give this a shot. Tumblr isn't exactly the ideal medium for this but it's the best I have access too, let me know what you think.
First things first, everyone seems to be forgetting almost instantly that MacT didn't say, "Yea those guys are gone, we'll take what we can get and if we can't get it we'll buy them out." However, based on what I'm reading on Twitter you'd never know it, guys are saying that's it Horcoff and Hemsky are at the very least bought out. I'm pretty sure what he actually said is...if we're going to trade them we'll be getting something substantial in return. ie They are not untouchable. Which begs the question: What has changed today from yesterday? Was Hemsky ever untouchable? I seem to remember quite clearly Hemmer being on TSN's Top 10 Trade Bait at the deadline this year...and the year before that...and the one before that. HEMSKY AND HORCOFF HAVE NEVER BEEN UNTOUCHABLE IN THE "MODERN" NHL ERA!! Their names have swirled around the rumor mill since the '06 team was team was dismantled.
I said this a few days ago on Twitter and was a little concerned when I first started reading the quotes this afternoon but I maintain it, Hemsky and likely Horcoff will start next season in Oilers jersey's and very likely end it as well. Why? Simple, Hemsky is finally starting to get healthy and there is possibly no more dynamic duo on the Oilers than Hemsky and Hall...seriously when they play together it's unreal. (Some advanced stats guy may tear me apart with corsi numbers on this but I don't really follow that.) My point however is they look electric on the ice and it's fun to watch. But besides all that, after the number of times Hemsky's name has come up in trade talks I think it'll be highly unlikely that any GM in the NHL will give the Oilers back a fair trade for Hemsky nevermind something better than him, give it up the Bruins are not going to trade us Lucic because their GM is not name Jay Feester. So if the only way to for Hemsky to be traded is to 'lose' the trade then why in the world would MacT make it. And yes I do expect to at the bare minimum tie every trade, I don't think that is too unreasonable. Finally on this note for all those who want Hemsky out so Yakupov can be the '#2 Right Winger' What's wrong with having Eberle, Hemsky, Yakupov down the right side? Would you rather I phrase that as Eberle, Yakupov, Hemsky? doesn't really make that large of a difference either way.
On to Horcoff, why isn't Horcoff going anywhere? First off they can't, although his contract is starting to look better to other teams. If Horcoff was still playing on the 1st line, or the Oilers were tight on cap space I could maybe see, wanting to improve that position, or free up the space. But he's not, Horcoff is playing 3rd or 4th line, which frankly he looks pretty damn good at. "But he's making a WAY too much money to play on the 3rd line!!!" Yes but guess what it's not your money so you don't have to concern yourself with it, and the Oilers have $14 M in capspace going into next season so no worries there either. Why keep Horcoff? He's a vetern leader, he can actually win a faceoff which is more than Gagner or Nuge can say on most nights, he looks decent in his own zone and can kill penalties, and he' has SOME (very minimal) but SOME offensive upside, which is more than Belanger or Smithson can say. Honestly, when Horcoff's contract is up I really wouldn't mind seeing MacT sign him back to a $2-3 M contract over a couple of years and keep him at that role. As for the C. I don't understand peoples need to give the letters to Eberle, Hall, Nuge etc, etc. If I'm a coach I give those letters to my character guys, Horcoff, Smyth, N. Schultz. About a third of the job of wearing those letters is talking to the media, and the skilled guys are gonna get plenty of attention as it is, might as well break up some of the attention and send it to the other guys, instead of making your stars answer for the entire team as well.
All in all what I did like about MacT's comments today is well...they were comments, the Dunce Cone of Silence that was on Tambo's head is finally out of the organization and we have some actual information from our GM.
I'm not saying I'm completely opposed to trading these guys, if we get Lucic and Bolland in return for them then awesome! I'm just saying it's not likely to happen.
Let me know what you thought.
