The list of UK producers who are indulging in the revived garage and bass sound is seemingly growing at a divine rate. Devotees of this prevailing movement include Dusky, Bicep, Greymatter, Huxley, and more recently, in the form of Belfast-based Ejeca.

Contrary to trend, Ejeca has resisted the subterranean East London temptations, choosing to grind away in his Northern Irish hometown, however his talents are permeating on a far wider scale, thanks to victorious outings on labels such as Future Classic and AUS Music. It is now the turn of Needwant to push the experimental boundaries further, something that the imprint often achieves with both raw and established signatures, with ‘Horizons’ offering variety as well as the expected clout.

The title track is a gutsy, sweat-soaked, fist-pumping salute to the times when big breakdowns dominated the dance floor, scenes that are quickly reconstructed through this nostalgic chugging number. ‘Dazed’ nestles somewhere between the shadows of late night clubbing and the early morning realisation that you have work the next day. The bass line is deep and hypnotic, and deserves a substantial sound system.

‘See You Through’ maintains the warm jolting bass theme, offering a tangible cuddle for the senses, but most of all, showing a clear mark of respect to an era of dance music that has required an adept and intelligent make over, not a full blown restoration. Ejeca being the right man for the job.
