Julia Ecklar's Horsetamer - a monument in fandom.

I am crying.  Happy tears.

When I first became involved in fandom in 1988, it was through my sister, who was in college at the time.  She had become friends with Julia Ecklar, a young filk singer.  I acquired some concert tapes of Julia's, which I listened to over and over again throughout high school and college.  I got to see Julia perform several times over the next decade before she largely left fandom to become an author and go back to school.  Her lyrics and strong vocals have become legendary.

Today, she released the first album she's made in 25 years: Horsetamer.  It is a fully-orchestrated masterpiece.  I've been listening to and singing these songs for over 20 years and they are as much a part of my fannish DNA as Star Trek or Star Wars.  She has songs about Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising, Dune, Elfquest and Ender's Game, as well as some original works.  The title track is Horse-Tamer's Daughter, a 12 minute epic song set in the world of Darkover.  

A lot of Julia's previous work is available on the Internet in various locations.  You can find many of the old stuff on Youtube and elsewhere.  Here's a small sampling:

She released this amazing fully orchestrated album, Divine Intervention, with songs about Ladyhawke! and the Karate Kid and Star Trek and lots of other fandoms.  It was remastered and released to CD a while back.  This is absolutely worth owning and listening to a lot.

Here's Julia singing the original recording of Horsetamer's Daughter, over thirty years ago, which was written by Leslie Fish, based loosely on Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. Her voice has changed a lot since then, but it's still marvelous.

Signy Mallory was the captain in Downbelow Station in C. J. Cherryh's amazing space opera book.

Fellowship Going South is one of the most famous filk songs about LOTR (not Julia's, I think).  

He's Dead, Jim is a silly little song about Star Trek TOS. 

One of my favorite songs is God Lives on Terra, which talks about all the different worlds in the galaxy and how they are lovely to visit, but coming home to Earth is the best.  =) 

Hope Eyrie is the filk anthem about the space race (a Leslie Fish song, here sung by Julia).
