The hammock that Columbus brought with him in 1492 was practical, as it took up little space when folded up and was also quite space-saving in its own right. However, in the beginning not everyone had a hammock, let alone two, as was the case later around 1800.

Now the watch system, with its four-hour rhythm, developed very early. While the two-watch system was introduced in the 18th century, the four-hour rotating system was used before that time. This meant that a man would go to sleep, be woken up after four hours and swap places with the man coming from the watch. This meant that the new arrival did not need a new hammock instead he used the one of his predecessor. It was still nice and warm, and when water came in or the sleeper had wet clothes, it was also damp. A nice place to sleep the Hot Bed.
