Feeling a Godspeed vibe right now... This is the debut album from Canadian post-rock ensemble Godspeed You! Black Emperor, a somewhat fluid collective, based out of Montreal, Quebec. Their sound entails long instrumental pieces, epochal noise bursts of apocalyptic passages, with elements of American folk, blues, classical, jazz, snippets of fragmented vocals, faint hints of gospel and soul, political polemics and religious fervour...all enmeshed and tangled up in the chaos is the ever-present vein of Hope, a sense of communal spirit amongst the madness of the world. We build quiet, indeterminate armies of Hope and Equality while they sit on their crumbling thrones of rusting gold, their Houses of Cards disintegrating in front of their unfeeling, unseeing eyes.
