hey tdm crew, my name is megan! um this is going to be a sort of long, and sort of personal post, but this is something that I really want to get off my chest and share with anyone who is interested about how much this series means to me.
four years ago today my best friend in the entire world passed away. her name was alex and her death was very sudden, she went to sleep not feeling well and then she just didn’t wake up. losing someone who is such a big part of your life is hard, especially when you’re both so young. death in general isn’t easy to deal with, but for me it was so much worse because of how abrupt it was. there was no last goodbye, no last “I love you”, one minute you have a best friend and the next minute she’s gone.
like all well-adjusted adults I decided not to deal with my emotions and to instead focus all of my attention on something else, so that I didn’t have to think about how much everything was hurting. a friend I made in college recommended the darkest minds series to me and and for a little while it was honestly what I needed. I could live in this world where a girl in a lot of pain met some amazing friends, and figured out how to grow and get stronger. I sped through the first two books, but when I finished never fade it sort of hit too close to home for me. jude was so sudden, so unexpected that it felt like a punch to the gut. I’ll be honest, it took me about a year before I was able to pick up in the afterlight but I’m really glad that I did.
I know that I definitely do not share the same problems that ruby does (thank god), but after what happened there was one thing I could relate to, and it was the desire to keep moving forward, to find a way past all the bad that has happened and make it out to the other side. when ruby said that she had to walk out on her own two feet, that cole would understand, it hit differently for me, I think, as someone grieving. I have to keep going, I have to make it out of here on my own.
finishing the series was really bittersweet for me, the ending was beautiful and hopeful and I was so happy to have seen it through, but once I was done I had to think about alex again. I had to think about how she was so young and how we had all these plans for our future together, think about the holidays and birthdays that I wouldn’t be able to share with her, think about how unfair everything was that sometimes you keep going and your friends don’t, no matter how desperately you want them there with you.
I’m not usually one for branching out and making friends but after I finished the series I started to talk to other people in the fandom, and I’m so glad that I did. our own little makeshift black betty crew is one of the best things that has ever happened to me (and I know that sounds really cheesy), but everyone was so nice and funny and it was so easy to talk to everyone and become friends.
there is an empty space inside of me that alex left behind and I don’t think that it will ever be completely filled. but being in this tiny, beautiful, supportive fandom definitely helped for me to not feel so alone. I’m honestly so happy that even though the series has ended and the movie is out, that a lot of people are still making cute edits and text posts, I’m glad everyone is still here enjoying this series. I lost my best friend, but these books helped me to gain so many others, and I really just want you all to know how grateful I am to you and how much I love everyone, even if we barely talk. this series is something that is always going to be special to me and I’m glad I get to be a part of it with all of you.
Howdy, SpiderBen! Happy birthday! You're officially an adult now!!! Since you're a Red, I tried to make something to honor that... it's a bit wonky but it's you!!!! @thatnerdyboi I hope your 18th year on Earth is full of growth, love, and happiness. 💛🖤
happy birthday to a girl truly born to chase the light, Miss @rbydly / @citrinecanary ! i hope your birthday is as lovely & wonderful as you are🌻🌟
I feel like looking for a specific part in The Darkest Minds is like looking through an old diary. You’re skimming through the pages and then you find a favorite part of yours and then 6 hours later you’ve read the whole book and you forgot what you were doing in the first place
“Nice, Liam. Wanna tell her your shoe size and favourite animal while you’re at it?”
