Hot Pursuit 1x01 "Pilot"

Written and directed by Kenneth Johnson. Nasty automobile designer Bradford Dillman is murdered. All evidence points to his top engineer Kerrie Keane. Knowing it was an elaborate frame, her husband Eric Pierpoint breaks her out of jail and they go on the run. In the second hour, they wind up working in a bar in New Orleans while searching for a woman (also Kerrie Keane) who was hired to help with the frame. They become embroiled in the problems of a young pregnant woman whose dancer boyfriend (Billy Hufsey) is a lowlife. They jeopardise their own freedom to help her escape the clutches of a black market baby ring. None of it feels real. The first half-hour is devoted to the protagonists and their perfect marriage. They are so in love and so demonstrative, that I grew to dislike them a little bit. They feel like the boring couple in a soap opera. And the elaborate frame up feels like it belongs in a soap, not an action drama. And there is action. A couple of decent fist fights with recurring villain Mike Preston, and an impressive car-ambulance chase around the streets of New Orleans. But the premise–which worked perfectly in The Fugitive, The Incredible Hulk, Two, etc.–feels contrived and silly here. Maybe because these protagonists have each other, so it never feels like they have lost anything–whereas the heroes of the other shows are tragic figures who have lost everything. Fall 1984: NBC aired Hot Pursuit in the final hour of Saturday prime time after Partners in Crime (aka Fifty/Fifty overseas). Against it, ABC had Finder of the Lost Loves, while CBS aired Cover Up. 5/10
