A Brief History of Album Covers, 2017. Frank Zappa - Hot Rats [1969] So in tune with the times was #zappa that, on his first solo album without the #mothersofinvention, he was able to execute a work that perfectly captured the prevailing #jazzrock trend favored by those wanting to ride the psych train to the end of the line. Furthermore, the sleeve for #hotrats featured a number of late-60s touch points that captured the waning of an era. The prevailing psych movement was coming to an end in 1969, as the likes of #bobdylan, #therollingstones and #thebeatles were going back to basics. #frankzappa’s “Hot Rats” shot is something of an epitaph for bright, psychedelic sleeves. Shot with an infrared camera, the image is visually striking, but the pink tone also suggests the sun going down for the last time. #rockandroll #thesixties #repriserecords #freeformimprovisation #satire #nonconformity #musicalvirtuosity https://www.instagram.com/p/CY2KsD3rlQ1/?utm_medium=tumblr
